January 2016

Dear <<Name>>,

It's always hard to believe another year has passed, but 2016 is already a month old. We can't wait to see what's in store for the cookbook world this year. We're starting off by achieving another milestone: over 6,000 cookbooks indexed.

Last month we looked at the favorite cookbooks of 2015 from around the world; this month we're seeing which books were the top sellers for the year. It's always interesting to compare the "best of" list with the "best selling" one because there is surprisingly little overlap.

Whether you're sticking to your New Year's cooking resolutions or getting ready to make decadent treats for Valentine's Day, we hope your new year is off to a fantastic start.

The team at EatYourBooks
Over 6000 cookbooks indexed!
stack of books We've reached another milestone, with over 6,000 cookbooks indexed on EYB. While that number may seem small compared to the 150,000+ books listed in the EYB Library, these books represents a significant portion of most member Bookshelves - an average of 78% for Premium members. Remember, if you have a favorite book that is not yet indexed, you can request to index it yourself - 35% of the books indexed since we started Member indexing in October 2011 have been done by EYB Members. (Thank you!)

Don't forget to add all of your books to your Bookshelf so we have a better idea of which books should be indexed next. Each unindexed book on your shelf earns a point in our indexing chart (and if you request that it be indexed, it gains another point). When a book receives enough points, it will be indexed. Once that happens, you will receive a notification email and recipes will be automatically added to your searches. But none of that can happen if we don’t know that you own the book!
Best selling cookbooks of 2015
bestsellers collage
Last month, we asked our friends at cookbook stores around the world to tell us their favorite books of 2015. Now we've asked them to report on their top sellers for last year. Comparing the lists from specialist stores in the USA to that for all US sales as reported by Nielsen, we see a completely different picture, because only 2 books -The Food Lab and Thug Kitchen - appear on both lists. Five of the 2015 bestsellers were also Top 10 books in 2014. See lists from the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe on the EYB blog.
Support a cookbook store at home or on the road
Kitchen Witch cookbook store If you have upcoming travel plans, remember to check out the EYB cookbook stores directory and visit any stores that happen to be in or near your destination. For example, if travel plans take you to New Orleans, Debbie from the Kitchen Witch cookbook store would love to see you in her new location. Many small cookbook stores depend on visits from tourists to stay afloat, so leave some room in your suitcase and support these great resources!

January cookbook roundup

January is a bit slow for new cookbooks, but there are several interesting releases, including several "best of" books by big name chefs. Vegan cooking is popular, and there are scads of diet books, clean eating, and bone broth books too tedious to list. Another item that caught our attention: coloring books for cooks! See the full list on the EYB blog.

Sara Dickerman penne with squash lamb schwarma
New Year's resolutions for healthy eating are often abandoned. Chef and food writer Sara Dickerman attempted to rectify this situation, creating a popular healthy eating plan on the Bon Appétit website. This plan is the basis for Sara's new cookbook, Bon Appetit - The Food Lover's Cleanse. Sara talked to us about her new book » To give you a flavor of what's inside his new cookbook, Dr. Angelo Acquista, author and board certified physician, provided us with three recipe excerpts from his latest cookbook, The Mediterranean Family Table. The recipes are "prescriptions" for healthy eating that go down easy. View the recipes and learn more about the book » Gizzi Erskine is best known for being a presenter on the British television show Cook Yourself Thin and for writing the show's cookbook. Gizzi is the food columnist for several publications, and has just released Gizzi's Healthy Appetite in the US. The Food Lover's Cleanse The Mediterranean Family Table Gizzi's Healthy Appetite
Since 2011, Sara Dickerman worked with registered dietician Marissa Lippert and Bon Appetit to create a yearly 2-week Bon Appétit Food Lover's Cleanse recipe plan. Now the plan has been expanded to cover the entire year in the new cookbook, Bon Appétit - The Food Lover's Cleanse. We're delighted to offer 10 copies of the book to EYB Members worldwide. Click the photo to view the contest, but don't delay; the contest ends on February 7, 2016. To help his patients improve their health, Dr. Angelo Acquista began "prescribing" them recipes for nutritious meals prepared with ingredients key to the Mediterranean diet. In The Mediterranean Family Table, he makes his prescription for health available to everyone, with recipes interspersed with anecdotes from Acquista's family history. We're giving away 5 copies of the book to EYB Members in the USA and Canada. Click the photo above to view the contest, which ends on February 17, 2016. Chef Gizzi Erskine doesn't believe that healthy eating should be boring. That philosophy is reflected in Gizzi's Healthy Appetite: Food to Nourish the Body and Feed the Soul, which pumps up healthy ingredients with bold flavours and textures. We're delighted to offer 5 copies to EYB Members in the USA and Canada. Click the photo above to view the contest, which ends February 24, 2016.
