Frog Floods and land management: myths and reality
River in countryside
Flooding can have devastating effects on people’s lives and livelihoods and in the future impacts are set to intensify as the frequency of extreme storm events ratchets-up from climate change.

Over the last few years we’ve been investigating in detail how land management and working with nature can reduce flooding, and at the same time provide better habitats for freshwater wildlife and reduce pollution.

In partnership with Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, the Environment Agency and others we’ve been running for the last seven years one of the biggest experiments in the country to find out ‘what works’ when it comes to managing land for nature: the Water Friendly Farming project. And as a wildlife organisation its particularly important for us that ‘working with nature’ really does provide benefits for nature: protecting species and habitats to reverse the long-term decline in freshwater wildlife as well as reducing floods.

Snail The First Year of People, Ponds & Water
The big give
People, Ponds & Water has been running for a whole year now.  Here’s a flavour of what we’ve achieved so far in the three parts of the project: Flagship Ponds, PondNet, and Clean Water for Wildlife.

Thanks to the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, and everyone who has contributed time and effort to this project, we are making a real difference for freshwater wildlife. Here’s to the next year!

Newt Thames Water for Wildlife

This year marks the beginning of our new Thames Water for Wildlife project.

Clean water is crucial to the wonderful wildlife that makes its home in the Thames Water region. But whilst we know something about the River Thames and its major tributaries, thousands of ponds, lakes, ditches and streams remain largely unmonitored and at risk. This project aims to discover the best and most unpolluted freshwater habitats, detect the true extent of nutrient pollution and help to monitor some of the wildlife that depends on clean water.

There are opportunities for schools, volunteer group and individuals in the Thames region to get involved in water testing and eDNA surveys.

January 2016

Hello!

We hope the new year is off to a good start for you. We've been busy talking about flooding. Many opinions have been shared, but we're following the evidence - take a look at the article.

It looks like the amphibians are getting busy too, perhaps a little earlier than usual. If you spot frogspawn, tell us about it in the Big Spawn Count.

Finally, could you take a moment to show support for the Landfill Communities Fund? Proposed changes to the scheme, which has been a vital source of funds for many of our projects, would shut it down. Find out more >

Flagship Focus

Rawcliffe Meadows
Every month we are featuring one the many wonderful pond sites supported by our Flagship Pond project, in which we help the people caring for some of the best pond sites in the country, making sure their special plants and animals have a secure future. This month we visit Rawcliffe Meadows in York.

Days to Remember

Thanks to everyone who helped us with our calendar and raising funds for freshwater wildlife, from sending photos to buying a calendar. It means a lot to us that people are interested in and support our work.
