January Flashback

Parent Support Group - 6th January

Ms. Shilpa Khushalani, Gateway-Mumbai parent and life coach, conducted a Parent Support Group on body language this month. She explained how our body language reflects the emotions we experience and significantly impacts others’ perceptions of us. By applying the reverse, that is, by changing out body language, we can regulate our emotions such that they are more positive.  By “fak[ing] it till we become it”, our body language can serve as a powerful tool to empower ourselves.

Visit to India Fine Art with Mr Ramesh Gurjala - 5th January

Each year we provide our students with the opportunity to engage with professionals from the art world. A few of our Middle School students recently took part in a Master Class conducted by Mr. Ramesh Gurjala at India Fine Art Gallery. Mr. Gurjala taught our students ‘graduated textures’ and charcoal outlines of mythological characters. Out students used this experience to create items to be put up at our upcoming Annual Art Show. Thank you Ms. Penny Patel and Mr. Manvinder Singh for having us at your gallery, and Mr. Gurjala for sharing your time with us. We look forward to more visits with other artists this year.

School Psychiatry Seminar - 13th January
Manika Khanna, Coordinator - Counseling Department, attended a full-day seminar titled “School Psychiatry” at the Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Center. A panel of local Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Pediatricians, and Occupational Therapists discussed school-based strategies for children with various behavioural and mental health concerns. The seminar reiterated strategies already being used at Gateway-Mumbai

Visitors:

We had an Occupational Therapist, a Senior Teacher and a Head Teacher visit us from Aarushi Learning Centre. They were interested in our infrastructure, particularly our sensory gyms, as they are in the process of “revamping their school”. Their visit included a meeting with our Sensory-Motor Department Coordinator - Ms. Mala Lamba, a school tour and observation of a few classes.

Congratulations to the following team members on their recent weddings:
  • Ms. Nayomi Kothari (Speech Therapist)
  • Ms. Riddhi Gogri (Teacher)
  • Half-Day In-House Professional Development on 8th February
  • Parent Support Group on 10th February. PSG is now open to parents, caregivers and relatives, of children with disabilities, from the community-at-large. This is a great opportunity for caregivers to better understand themselves as individuals, connect with others who have similar experiences, and build within and between themselves a strong support system. If you are interested in participating, please contact Ms. Manika Khanna (Counseling Department Coordinator) at mkhanna@gatewayschoolmumbai.org.
  • Professional Development Workshop - A Framework for Behaviour Management in the Classroom Setting on 13th February. This workshop is particularly relevant for General and Special Education Teachers, and Therapists/Clinicians working with children. If you are interested in participating in the workshop, please send an email to pd@gatewayschoolmumbai.org.
  • Book Club: Checking for Understanding - Douglas Fisher & Nancy Frey. This book highlights the importance of formative, or ongoing, assessment and its role in the teaching and learning process. The authors offer a rich array of practical and proven methods for diagnosing students’ prior knowledge and preconceptions before instruction commences and for regularly monitoring their learning along the way. Parents, if you are interested in being a part of this book club, please contact Ms. Rachna Shah (Language Program Coordinator) at rshah@gatewayschoolmumbai.org.
  • Visit by NY Team from 15th to 19th February
