Celebrating thirty years of World Heritage in the United Kingdom

2016 is special for World Heritage in the UK as it is the 30th anniversary of the inscription of our first seven Sites onto the World Heritage List. Those sites are: St Kilda, Giant’s Causeway, the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd, Durham Castle and Cathedral, Ironbridge Gorge, Studley Royal Park including the ruins of Fountains Abbey and Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites. The seven sites were inscribed at the 10th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris from 24 – 28 November 1986.

Blaenavon Industrial Landscape was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000 in recognition of the exceptional testimony to the dynamic forces that drove the Industrial Revolution that is told through the area's heritage assets

Volunteers Needed!

The new Blaenavon Community Museum is on the lookout for new volunteers. The museum, which will open at the Workmen’s Hall in February, provides a range of volunteering opportunities, including customer service, research, conservation monitoring, heritage interpretation, education and administration. Please email blaenavonmuseum@outlook.com for more information.

Big Pit National Coal Museum

We’re hoping to set up forums to help us at Big Pit to plan and deliver various projects and opportunities to improve the experience of the museum. So, whether you’re a teenager, a parent, a grandparent, a great-grandparent, retired, an ex -miner/coal industry worker, or just have an interest in our industrial heritage, we’d love to hear from you! Give us a call on 029 2057 3666 or e-mail kathryn.jenkins@museumwales.ac.uk

Youth Ambassadors Update

Our very own World Heritage Youth Ambassadors have come back to the New Year with a bang. They have been away on a team building day, working together to build close relationships  at the Ross on Wye Adventure Centre, kindly funded by Blaenavon Town Council as a thank you for all their hard work at the recent Youth Summit. They have also been working with Big Pit, National Coal Museum, and National Museum Wales to film a new exhibition about Welsh life, which will be premiered and exhibited at St Fagans, National Museum of Welsh Life. With plans this year to visit other World Heritage Sites in the UK, and join local community groups, the Youth Ambassadors keep going from strength to strength. If you are aged between 13-25 and want to make a difference to our World Heritage Site, contact Dan Oliver dan.oliver@torfaen.gov.uk for more information or visit our website, www.visitblaenavon.co.uk/youthambassadors
