Alton Little Theater presents Panache
Alton Little Theater is producing a Special Engagement run of a new play, PANACHE by Don Gordon of Los Angeles on Valentine's weekend February 12th, 13th ( 7:30 performance) and 14th ( 2pm performance). Tickets for the quirky Romantic Comedy ( a fund-raiser for ALT) are $14 ( and include a little Chocolate gift!) and can be purchased through the ALT Website at www.altonlittletheater.org or through the Box Office Line ( 618-462-3205). Director of the Production, Lee Cox, first made contact with the author a year ago and fell in love with a script that she calls, " the most compelling new show of the 40 scripts I've been sent this year!". Indeed, Cox and the author have become virtual friends and the author has sent ALT the original License Plate prop used in the New York premier, and has been an invaluable resource for discussions about the play which is set in Brooklyn, New York and features a sweet jazz soundtrack and the use of "art" as the primary set design.
The story involves an unlikely romance between an artist, a man who has been broken by the losses in his life and his meeting with a woman who dares him to rejoin the living. Kevin Frakes and Lee Cox take on the roles of Harry Baldwin and Kathleen Trafalgar and their tempestuous relationship is hugely supported by actors portraying a local bookie (Lief Anderson), a young man who represents all the hopes of youth ( Nick Trapp) and Harry's first true love ( Valerie Sprague). Cox says that the script is "rich and touching without undue sentiment, and just entertaining....we've had such a great time exploring what love and friendship and passion mean to different generations and I love that the play throws in a little poker, a little golf and a whole lot of witty dialogue".
The two-act show will provide the perfect, somewhat unique way of honoring a weekend about love and audiences should be thrilled to have the opportunity to experience more art in the Dorothy Colonius foyer where renowned local artist, Gene Ursprung and "wearable art" designer, Lillian Bates of By Design will feature works and living mannequins like Jarris Waide will also pose. Cox has asked some local Celebrities to fill in a small cameo role in the production and hopes that the whole experience will touch the audiences' heart and spirit and remind all of the healing power of loving someone. Pete Basola and Vernon Hamel will be taking production photos for the playwright and distribution and interviews/more information can be obtained by contacting the Director, Lee Cox at 618-531-3777.

West End Players Guild presents Educating Rita
Winter is here. The snow is flying and the temperature is dropping. What better time for a very warm-hearted comedy, Willy Russell’s Educating Rita, presented February 12-21 by West End Players Guild at the theatre in the Union Avenue Christian Church?
Educating Rita is “Round Three†of a season-long look at the “Battle of the Sexes,†which began in September with David Ives’s Venus in Fur. In November, West End Players offered Gina Gionfriddo’s witty and insightful look at 21st-century feminism, Rapture, Blister, Burn. The season concludes in April with Lee Blessing’s Great Falls, an unusual and intriguing “road trip†story about an older man and a younger woman struggling to get their broken lives back on track.
Performances of Educating Rita will be on Thursday (second week only), Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 and Sunday matinees at 2:00. All performances are at the theatre in the Union Avenue Christian Church, 733 Union Ave. (just north of Delmar). Free parking and the theatre entrance are in the rear of the church. Tickets to the show are on sale now at www.WestEndPlayers.org/tickets.
West End Players Guild has dedicated this season to the memory of two great ladies of the St. Louis theatre, Fay McKenna and Dorothy Davis, who died in late 2015 after decades of active involvement in our company; and of Dorothy’s husband Jerry Davis, who also died in 2015. For more information on their lives and contributions, please visit www.WestEndPlayers.org.

Act Two Theatre presents The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Performances Dates: February 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21
Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2:00 p.m.
Book by Rachel Sheinkin
Music and Lyrics by William Finn
Directed by Andrew Kuhlman
An eclectic group of six-graders arrives at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, each eager to win for very different reasons. Sweet and shy Olive brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to the bee; Bold and hyperallergic speller William Barfee uses his "magic foot" to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip is struggling with his burgeoning puberty; easily distracted Leaf is unconvinced that he's smart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed by her consistent success; and politically aware Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre only wants to impress her dads. In hilarious, touching, and catchy songs, each speller reveals his/her hopes, struggles, and passions as they make their way through the competition. With an engaging, tuneful score by William Finn and a sweet, funny book by Rachel Sheinkin, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee causes audiences to fall in love, both with the show itself and its "perspicacious," "jocular," and "effervescent" spellers.
SPECIAL DEAF NIGHT AT THE THEATRE with Sign Language Interpreters provided for the SATURDAY NIGHT, FEBRUARY 20 performance at 7:30pm.
ALL ARE WELCOME to this performance, not just those from the Deaf and hard of hearing community, and for those who have never seen a sign language interpreted theatre event, it is quite extraordinary and an art form in itself.
