1) Study Group on Canada's TRC Report - First Session on Thursday, February 4 at Noon

Read and discuss the summary of the final report of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission (TRC): Honouring the Truth, Reconciling for the Future. Join with others to reflect on the history and legacy of residential schools in Canada and on the TRC's 94 Calls to Action. 

The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women and the Aboriginal Women's Association of PEI will host a series of 8 sessions to be held at the Confederation Centre Public Library, from 12:00 - 1:00pm, beginning on Thursday, February 4th, 2015. Each session will focus on a section of the summary report, and will have a facilitator to moderate conversation and a counsellor for those who require assistance. Open to everyone. 2) International Tea House 2016

The PEI International Friendship Association is organizing another series of International Tea House events.  Come and celebrate the cultural mosaic of Prince Edward Island with your family and friends. Enjoy music, dance, educational presentations, cultural performances, arts and crafts, and ethnic food from all over the world. There will be door prizes!

3) Understanding Financial Statements

When: Friday, February 5th, 9:00 am to 12:00 noon
Where: Rural Action Centre, 455 Main Street Alberton.  


Rural Action Centre – 455 Main Street, Alberton will be hosting a workshop entitled, “Understanding Financial Statements”.

This 3-hour workshop will be held Friday, February 5th, 9am to 12noon in the Boardroom of the Rural Action Centre. Storm date is Friday, February 12th.

Ronda Bellefontaine, Like Nobody’s Business, will facilitate this free workshop.  Limited seating available.

Information provided during this session will include:
-An overview of each of the four financial statements
-A breakdown of the information that is included in each of the four statements
-Defining of terminology
-What a business owner should be looking for when reading their financial statements

4) Visiting Author: Two Events

The first week of February, we have two events with Dr. Rita Wong, poet, water researcher and activist, and professor of critical and cultural studies at Emily Carr University in Vancouver. The first event is an exciting new collaboration between the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Science, and is focused on a key issue for PEI: water. Both events are free, and refreshments will be served. There will be ample time at the lecture for conversation between the audience and Dr. Wong, whose research and poetry centres on Vancouver's streams and watersheds.

5) Laughter Yoga

The South Shore Arts Council is sponsoring an introductory course in Laughter Yoga with Anne Putnam. Laughter Yoga is based on the belief that voluntary laughter provides physiological and psychological benefits through a combination of relaxation and yogic breathing techniques and simple fun group activities to bring on the laughter that makes you feel good. 6) Your Parts and Beyond: Sexual Health, You and Your Community


Sexual and reproductive health is an essential part of our overall health and wellbeing across the lifespan and it means many things to many people.
Join AIDS PEI and a panel of Islanders for National Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Week to discuss and explore what sexual health means to you.

8) International Development Week 2016

February 7 - 13, 2016

The fifteenth annual International Development Week (IDW) will take place at several venues in Charlottetown, February 7 - 13.
IDW is a national event held each year to increase awareness of Canada’s role in international development. The events also serve to educate the general public on life in developing countries.

The events will take place at UPEI, and other Charlottetown venues. Here is the schedule:

All Week - Displays at Timothy's
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) will have displays at Timothy's all week.
Hours: 6:30am - 8:00pm
Venue: Timothy’s World Coffee, 154 Great George Street, Charlottetown


Tuesday, February 9 -  Webinar and Workshop, Sustainable Development Goals: Role of Prince Edward Island
Presented by Dr. S. Kindornay.
Time: 1:00 - 4:30pm
Venue: Murphy’s Community Centre, Room 207, 200 Richmond Street, Charlottetown


Wednesday, February 10 - Documentary Film Refugees of the Blue Planet
Screening will be followed by a discussion hosted by World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and Cinema Politica, Charlottetown.

Thursday, February 11 - How PEI NGOs are working towards Sustainable Development
Presentations by NGOs and youth representatives of Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) will discuss how PEI NGOs are working towards the Sustainable Development Goals.Source: BUZZon.com

9) Next Stage of Consultations - Special Committee on Democratic Renewal

The Special Committee on Democratic Renewal of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island is starting its next phase of consultations, which will focus on the plebiscite question. There will be a series of community forums starting on February 9th and concluding on March 1st dedicated to this topic:

  • Feb. 9 (7 pm) Murphy's Commmunity Centre in Charlottetown;
  • Feb. 11 (7 pm) Morell Regional High School in Morell;
  • Feb. 23 (7 pm) Central Queens United Church in Hunter River;
  • Feb. 25 (7 pm) Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 6 in Tignish;
  • Feb. 27 (2 pm) Loyalist Lakeview Resort in Summerside; and
  • March 1 (7 pm) Murphy's Community Centre in Charlottetown.

The format will be engaging, and will feature discussions among those in attendance and an exchange of ideas. A video with some information on various electoral system options will be shown to start the conversation. 
 
You will see advertisements in this Saturday's Guardian and Journal Pioneer newspapers; and next Wednesday's editions of La voix acadienne, West Prince Graphic and Eastern Graphic. The Special Committee hopes that you will be able to join them at one of the upcoming meetings. There is no need to register. All are welcome!

10) Stratford Family Festival

on Islander Day

The Stratford Youth Centre is hosting the first ever Stratford Family Festival as part of the 2016 Stratford Winter Carnival. Teaming up with Par-T-Perfect, the event is a fundraiser which includes 6 large inflatables, 2 smaller toddler inflatables, a mini golf course, face painting, balloon twisting, carnival style games and a canteen service which includes popcorn, cotton candy and pizza. The event will also include a Family Lounge which will feature entertainment. Also check out the Par-T-Pets room where you can build your own Teddy Bear. 

The event is a Fundraiser for the Stratford Youth Centre. Entry is free to the event and it is a pay per ride layout. A Bracelet costs $10.00 per child which includes unlimited access to all the inflatables, games and mini golf, one face painting and one balloon twisting. (Family rates will be available for 3 or more children). Individual tickets per ride may be purchased instead of a bracelet. Canteen items and the Par-T-Pets are an additional cost. The entertainment and activities in the Family Lounge are free.

11) City of Charlottetown Islander Family Fun Day



Islander Family Fun Day
Celebrate Islander Day on Monday, February 15, 2016 with free, fun activities for the whole family in Charlottetown.

All activities listed in the schedule are FREE!  Find the schedule at this link.

Free tickets for the family swims at the CARI Complex must be picked up in advance. Bowling lanes at Murphy's Community Centre must be booked in advance. All other activities are being offered on a first come, first serve basis.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL ISLANDER FAMILY FUN DAY ACTIVITIES ARE WEATHER PERMITTING. For more information, contact City Hall at 902-629-4117.
