Notes from the Podium
by Tristan Arnold

One of the things I love about teaching music is that the lessons of music seem to be more applicable to daily life than most subjects. Don't get me wrong, if I didn't have my math skills I'd be in unbearable debt, and without some semblance of attentiveness in English I wouldn't have gotten the jobs that allow me to do what I love all day. But music more than any other subject requires us to do what is absolutely crucial to a successful and joyful life: to interact positively with others and create something greater than any individual could create on his or her own.

Some years ago, some composer sat down to put some musical ideas on paper. Two hundred, or 100, or 60 years later, we are here reading that score, bringing life to those notes. Across hundreds of years, we are collaborating. What's more, as an orchestra we respond to each other: watching the conductor, reacting to our stand partner, listening for cues from across the orchestra. And then, there is a soloist. Now the collaborative challenge is greater still: We melt within our sections sound, and then within the sound of the orchestra, and with our eyes on the conductor we try to act with the same intention as the soloist, anticipating rather than reacting.

In Tuesday's rehearsal, our dynamic anticipation of the soloists was particularly lacking. Do you have any friends who are so involved in what they have to say that they never listen to a single word you say? Don't be that person. As a musician, your role is first and foremost to listen and provide support. There are times when you have a chance to shine, but when it is a concerto that someone else is playing, don't count on those chances adding up to very many measures! Make sure you have a pencil this Tuesday, as it is our last chance to lock in the details before Saturday's show. Happy practicing!

See you Tuesday,
