Explosion in your heart

When my 8-year-old daughter Ruby heard the news that she won a national Scholastic art contest on Friday, she described the feeling as "an explosion in my heart." The purity of her words will never leave me and it also sparked an idea.

Have you asked yourself what makes your heart explode? In doing research for my book, I found that hobbies aren't optional, they are necessary for a healthy body and mind. If you don't have one, it is a great time to pick one up. How? Think back to your childhood. Was there anything that made your heart explode? Pick up a course catalogue from a local college and see what piques your interest. Ask friends about their hobbies.

Busting out the violin or the paintbrush doesn't have to feel like a guilty pleasure. Your interests are an essential part of who you are. Like having friends, having hobbies makes you healthier, more well rounded and fulfilled.
