We may be in the heart of winter, but spring is around the corner. It's a good idea to start planning your North Carolina spring and summer trips right now to get the best availability.
Here are a few ideas curated by our founder, Leigh Powell Hines. And you can always look to Visit NC for expanded ideas.
All ABOARD!
Have you ever wanted to take a train ride through the Blue Ridge Mountains? The North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, N.C. is offering two train excursions this spring. Ticket sales begin Feb. 1 for museum members and Feb. 2 for the general public. Several options of seating class tickets will be sold. First class train riders receive breakfast and dinner in the dining car. Children under two do not need tickets, but it's a long day from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
For the Blue Ridge excursion trip to Asheville, passengers will spend three hours in quaint Biltmore Village before returning back to Spencer.
On our last trip to Biltmore Village, we dined at the Village Wayside Bar and Grille, which is located in the historic train depot.I had the best homemade coconut pie I've ever tasted. Desserts are rotated nightly. Apparently, the restaurant's version of the pie is a family recipe. It is divine.
Lodging is recommended in Salisbury, N.C. for these two special train excursions. There is an upscale Courtyard by Marriott near the Transportation Museum and quaint Bed and Breakfast Inns for overnight stays. For guests older than 16, I think the Across the Pond Bed and Breakfast would be lovely. Your hostesses are a British couple, and the Innkeeper will pick you up upon request in his Jaguar at the train station.
The town of Salisbury is a fun N.C. weekend destination for families who like historic and active adventures. The first discovery of gold was in 1824 in Gold Hill. Today, it's a vast 70-acre park and historic village. Salisbury is also home to the Eagle Point Nature Preserve, a two hundred acre natural area on remote part of High Rock Lake. Visitors can hike 4.5 miles of trails to vistas of the lake and wildlife observation points. Salisbury is also in the Yadkin Valley Wine Region so wine tastings are also abundant.

Asheville, N.C. is a great destination for spring. Biltmore hosts Biltmore Blooms from March 19-May 26. This year, in addition to majestic sweeps of flowers coloring acres of gardens, America’s largest home embraces this season of new beginnings with the special exhibition Fashionable Romance: Wedding Gowns in Film, included in Biltmore admission.
