2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Are Now Available

Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Public Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture released the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which emphasizes the importance of a healthy eating style in reducing the risk of chronic diseases. MyPlate aims to translate the science of the Dietary Guidelines into messages, resources, and tools to help you find food and beverage choices that are right for you. Check out the new MyPlate initiative designed to help American families find solutions to make healthy eating easier.

Big Change in Julian Union Elementary Schools

Small but mighty, Julian Union Elementary School District (JUESD) set out to create meaningful change in student health. In 2011, JUESD students were eating frozen entrees shipped from the Midwest. But these days, students eat meals cooked from scratch, produce sourced from local growers wherever possible, and enjoy Harvest of the Month items on the salad bar. Read the full story here.

We're Committed to Wellness Policy Work

We're happy to report the Healthy Schools Workshop Series was a hit! The workshops reviewed Wellness Policy Guidelines, emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement and provided tips to engage those stakeholders, introduced and practiced using the School Health Index, and celebrated wellness policy work. Made possible through a true collaboration (CA Department of Education, Dairy Council of CA, Public Health Institute/Prevention First, CA Action for Healthy Kids, Orange County Department of Ed, San Bernardino County Office of Ed, LA County Office of Ed, CA Local School Wellness Policy Collaborative), the workshops reached and trained over 400 stakeholders representing 140 school districts throughout California!
