THE JAFFA
SEASON 2015/2016

From the President...

Hi everyone

I hope you had a great Christmas and a cool Yule. The next 4 months of our patrol session will see some challenging conditions so please let's keep up our vigilance and service at South Narrabeen.

Committee Update
We have had a number of changes on the South Narrabeen committee lately.  We say goodbye to Jess (Competition), Angie (Marketing) and Louise (Sponsorship). I would like to thank Jess for all her hard work in the last 2 years. Angie is still a valued member of the Club and will continue with her role as patrol captain and will also take up the challenge to train to become a Branch Assessor which will be a great asset to the club.

Jake Warner has kindly put up his hand to take on the Director of Competition role with the assistance of Thecla. It is a big role with Branch, State and Aussies coming up but we will be in good hands, many thanks. I would also like to thank Sarah Oaten for coming onto the Club Committee in the Director of Marketing role. She is doing a great job.

We still have an opportunity for the Director of Sponsorship role. A full job description is outlined in our ‘Positions Vacant’ section of the Jaffa. If anyone is interested, please email secretary@snslsc.org.au with your expression of interest.

Thank you
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank some of the people who have gone above and beyond:

  • Matt Fordham who has taken on the role of Director of Education and is doing an excellent job. Another bronze squad started their journey on the 12th January. Also a new 4 day SRC course was undertaken in the school holidays.  If you are interested in attaining any other lifesaving awards please email education@snslsc.org.au
  • Martin who continues to do an awesome job in our administration and has often been seen out in the lake very early going hard on the ski, wonderful to see.
  • The Ocean View Room had a bumper month and continues to bring in some fantastic clients so well done Charles and his team.
  • Shannan our Director of Lifesaving is doing a sensational job with the help from Grant.  They are really keeping the club and everyone on patrol supported and moving forward.
  • Richard and his team are running Nippers very smoothly. I understand Santa turned up on time and was very impressed with all our Nippers, and even some of the parents.
  • Karen is doing a sensational job behind the scenes and with her Nipper BBQ crew each Sunday keeping everyone feed. Huge thank you.
  • Mark and his Building Sub-Committee continue to do a good job with the development of the cafe.  This great work has resulted in a new cafe which may open as soon as the end January.
  • Ted is heading up our 11th year for the Bush to Beach weekend running from 29th January to 1st February. Everyone and anyone is welcome to come down and join us over this very special weekend.
What’s been happening around the club?
Our beach and sand is slowly returning and I am pleased to let you know that the sand dune is being cleaned up with help from Warringah Council.

We had a wonderful turn out at the New Year's Eve BBQ down stairs. Thank you to all those who attended, it certainly was a great way to see in 2016.

We also had a visit from a young inspirational 17 year old, Sam Atkins, who is on an epic journey of patrolling at all 129 beaches in NSW. He has based himself at our Club over the past few weeks and was very thankful for the hospitality Southy has shown him. We all wish him good luck.

Whats coming up
We have lots happening down at Southy which I hope you are all keen to get involved with:
  • Our inaugural South Narrabeen SLSC Golf day at Long Reef Golf Club on Friday 5th Feburary. Any enquiries please contact Sarah snslscgolfday@gmail.com
  • The Bush to Beach weekend 29th January to 1st February.
  • Look forward to seeing all our members and friends at the Club.

See you in the salt water!
Andy Cross

Bush to Beach...

Friday 29 January to 1 February, 2016
This will be the 11th year of ‘Bush to Beach’. Members of the Club and the community will put on a safe and inspirational time for 40 disadvantaged children from the outback towns of Brewarrina/Bourke who will South Narrabeen SLSC and see the ccean for the first time.

The Brewarrina group will comprise entirely of Aboriginal children both boys and girls who have applied to come to the beach and learn CPR/basic first aid and also to see how a Surf Club is run. Brewarrina is about 850kms north west of Sydney, has a population of 1200 and is near the Queensland border. During summer months the temperature averages 40 degrees. It is a remote town and transport is limited, so the children who have attended the program in the past have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

If you wish to get involved or require further information please contact the people below. The Club is keen for any assistance from people who might want to volunteer over weekend with water safety, beach events, some cooking etc.

Lifesaving...

I would like to say a big hi to all our valued members and congratulations on a great season thus far! South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club is indebted to all patrolling members for ensuring once again that safety comes first and foremost at our beautiful stretch of sand the greatest beach on the pacific blue coast.

So far this season our patrolling members have completed thousands of countless hours keeping our beach safe for the local community and those from abroad alike. There have been 12 rescues in total, 2 minor cuts (1 of which got infected and a stay in hospital has resulted thou all is ok now), 25 marine stings which have mostly come in the hotter part I the last two months. Most importantly these numbers would be much greater if not for the 522 preventative measures undertaken at our Club.

In closing I would like to thank you all for your hard work & dedication see you on the sand.

Shannan Hitchen
Director of Lifesaving

Nippers...

As we enter the second half of the session I would like to take a minute to reflect on the season to date.

It is extremely encouraging to see many new families joining in with the controlled chaos on Sunday mornings, what we call Nippers! It is also fantastic to catch-up with our older Nippers and their families from previous sessions.

Over the last couple of sessions we have focused on helping the older Nippers transition from the day-to-day nippers program into their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) and onto Bronze Medallion. This focus has seen South Narrabeen develop a large number of future Surf Lifesavers to assist in patrolling our beaches.  Something we as a club can be extremely proud of.

In the lead up to Christmas we ran yet again another fantastic Christmas Party.   I know for a fact that Santa was very tied by the end of the evening. That said, I would like to extend my thanks to all those that helped in making the Christmas party such an enjoyable evening.

As a volunteer organisation, we would not be able to function without the support and contribution of all parents. I would like to recognise our Age Managers, Water Safety, Handicapper and Canteen parents that continually step-up every week to ensure the smooth running of our Nippers Program. We continue to need the support of all parents, if you are able to help or not sure of how you maybe able to assist, please let me know

Richard Dowling
Nippers Chairman
