Across the ALPA network, we continue to have a lot going on over this traditionally slower time of the year. From helping with the recovery from floods in Nauiyu community, to building projects underway at Buthan on Elcho Island and at our Darwin regional office. Over in the Torres Strait Islands and Cape York, our Island & Cape staff got involved with the Kuki Touch carnival at Badu, as well as giving food preparation workshops at Aurukun. At Ramingining CDP, the crew have said no to sugar, and at Milingimbi we celebrate our retail graduates achievements and a successful community gathering for ALPA CDP. ALPA also featured in the NT News and our Wanderers Women's NTFL team are well on the way to a berth in the Grand Final. We also hear from one of our board members about his experiences. Nauiyu Floods recovery effort
Following severe floods in the Nauiyu community over Christmas, ALPA and the Darwin fire and rescue services have been delivering replacement household goods to the Nauiyu community. Smiles were created on the residents faces that were affected by the recent floods. Volunteers worked hard to deliver beds, fridges and washing machines to everyone who lost these items in the disaster.

Certificate II in Retail graduations at Milingimbi
Congratulations to staff from our Milingimbi store who received their Certificate II in Retail Operations from ALPA this month. People who completed their certificates were: Evonne Bulkuja, Lynda Nulmatha, Jeremiah Djirrikitj, Helen Motiti and Calvin Mugulwuy. Well done to all our graduates!

Aurukun Food Demonstration
The Island & Cape Nutritionist Tracey Fitzgibbon did a cook up with Apunipima Cape York Health Council using Hamper lite. Pictured is Apunipima Community Nutritionist Kani Thompson and Tracey serving a taste tester of light hamper and veggie stir fry. The healthy cooking demonstration showcased the difference in fat content between full fat and low fat hamper and how to steam the fat off hamper before eating.

Milingimbi CDP community meeting a great success
A positive community gathering was held at Milingimbi CDP Women's Centre to inform the community about ALPA CDP & what we do, the benefits of coming to activities with some inspiring speakers.
ALPA CDP employee Joe Walwul told his personal story about getting to where he is today. He talked about not having an education; not being able to speak English; having no skills or qualifications & other barriers. He said he took the opportunities when they came along & he found his confidence & had a go. With each job, he got more skilled & more confident. His story was powerful & he was courageous to share his story with people. Since the gathering, there has been a great boost in CDP participants on the community and renewed interest.

Associate Board Member Profile
Jason has been an associate board member of the ALPA board for 3 years, and was formerly a model ALPA employee at Gapuwiyak, being the first to receive a Certificate IV in Retail. In this profile video, he talks about his role on the board, the benefits of having women on the board, and his dream of continuing his involvement with ALPA.

Kuki Touch Football Carnival at Badu
Island & Cape staff were out at the Kuki Touch Football Carnival held in mid January, handing out fruit and water donated by our suppliers. The local kids really loved the fruit and it was a great way to promote healthy eating on the community.

Ramingining CDP says no to sugar

The Ramingining ALPA CDP crew will have no more sugar in their morning tea and coffee! This is a great idea that came from the team after seeing the impact of sugar in making them feel tired at work after an initial burst of energy. These men are positive role models for the whole community, making changes in a small way that tackle the health problems associated with eating a high sugar diet. View Video

Buthan Store building update
Work is continuing on the building of the new Buthan store on Elcho Island, with the roof in place and interior work underway. The structure and roof for a house for the Buthan store manager is also complete. The new store will specialise in electrical goods as well as standard grocery items.

RED Centre Construction commences
Building has commenced on the Regional Economic Development (RED) Centre attached to the ALPA office in Darwin. This new centre will host our CDP management staff and a training centre, so if you hear jackhammers when you call us on the phone, it's the sound of progress.

ALPA in the news
The NT news featured an article on ALPA's training achievements and approach on the 13th January 2016. This provided great exposure for our work in the training area.

Wanderers Women in the finals running
With only four rounds remaining in the NTFL Womens Division, the Wanderers women proudly sponsored by ALPA are sitting in second place on the ladder with a finals berth looking certain. Well done to the Wanderers women and good luck in the leadup to the finals!
