February 2016 Glendale Art Association Palette Newsletter

Our next meeting is tomorrow evening, February 11th, at 7PM

OUR FEBRUARY PRESENTER:

Watercolor Artist & Instructor,
Sheri Garwood

Early on, Sheri states, "I always loved drawing and painting better than anything else.", which eventually influenced her  toward lots of figure and fashion drawing in her free time. This led to a teaching position at Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, her alma mater. Teaching agreed with her and made her happy, so she started instructing other art classes at McGroarty Arts Center in Tujunga. She branched out into watercolor and studied with many of the top teachers in the country. Since the early 2000's she has been immersed in drawing and painting primarily in watercolor and more recently, acrylics and mixed media are part of her artistic journey. In addition to the weekly classes at McGroarty, she occasionally teaches workshops, including her own “Wine & Watercolor” class, and an annual plein air workshop in Central California. Her watercolors and acrylics will be featured in a solo show opening March 12th at the Backdoor Bakery Café in Sunland.

Please join us for this well traveled teacher's refreshing and inspiring watercolor demonstration.

MEETING LOCATION: Citibank Building, basement meeting room, 2350 Honolulu Ave., Montrose (Entry is in the back of the building off the alley).

Member - $5 entry fee • Guests - $7 entry fee (First time visitors are FREE!)

"Anyone interested in representational art would like this show. I've been impressed every time I've seen it." — Diane Carter

🎬 The first ever GAA movie night...

took place on Jan. 24th at Diane Carter’s house. Movie going members enjoyed "The Agony and the Ecstasy" with Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison. Funds raised will go to our ever important high school scholarship fund.

The February movie event is scheduled for Sunday, February 21st at 4:30 pm, when we will be watching a Banksy film, “Exit Through The Gift Shop”.

"Exit Through The Gift Shop" is the story of how an eccentric French shop-keeper and amateur film-maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner. The film contains footage of Banksy, Shephard Fairey, Invader and many of the world's most infamous graffiti artists at work. - Written by Sundance Film Festival

Diane Carter will be hosting again. A $3 donation is requested. Diane with once again serve popcorn and homemade lemonade/tea to attendees. Please RSVP to Diane at dianem.carter@yahoo.com. If you can’t make it to the movie, but, would like to donate funds, please send your tax deductible donation to Glendale Art Association, PO Box 413, Glendale, CA 91209.

Give yourself a pat on the back.

Because of you, our members and guest salon participants, GAA was able to award several scholarships to graduating seniors at the following schools: Hoover H.S., Crescenta Valley H.S., Glendale H.S., and Daley H.S. Retired teacher, GAA member and youth advocate, Diane Carter did the honor of presenting the awards. With college tuition rising ever higher, it is our goal to award even more scholarships next Spring, but, we can’t do it without your continued support! THANK YOU!

Volunteers Needed:

With the new year we find ourselves short handed in several critical areas in our organization. Glendale Art Association is only as strong as our volunteer base, so please consider donating just a little bit of your time and expertise in one of the following areas:
  • Exhibition Installation, 3-5 volunteers needed (6-8 hours per exhibition)
Duties include: assisting with the intake and out-take, organization, labeling and hanging of artworks.

  • Exhibition Marketing and Promotion, 1-2 volunteers needed (3-5 hours per exhibition)
Duties include: Distribution and coordination of postcards, flyers, posters, news releases etc. associated with promoting our exhibitions. This person would work in concert with the Publicity Chair. Writing and computer graphic skills are a plus for this position.

  • Exhibition Refreshments, 1 volunteer needed (3-5 hours per exhibition)
Duties include: Creating a sign up for food and refreshments to be brought to the opening reception for the exhibition and setting up the table for attendees.

  • Printed Newsletter Distribution, 1 volunteer needed (1-2 hours per month)
Duties include: Printing and mailing the digital newsletter to members without computers (approx. 8 issues).

  • Membership Chair, 1 volunteer needed (2-4 hours per month, 1 Year Commitment)
Duties include: Maintaining the excel spreadsheet of all members — current and past; collecting membership dues, communicating with members about annual dues, attending board meetings one time per month and sharing information about current membership with the board.
A sign up sheet will be available at the member's meetings or please email Vicky Rees at: glendaleartassociation.com.

Hightlights from our January Meeting

Caryl St. Ama, our January demonstrator, brought all her Encaustic “toys" from R&F and shared some very interesting techniques for making art. In addition to encaustic wax application, she also talked about image transfer and studio safety. Thanks Caryl for an exceptional presentation AND the nifty brush and paint stick giveaways.
Congratulations to the following January mini-show winners: 1st Place - Araks Johannes, 2nd Place and Best of Show - Vicky Rees, 3rd Place - Charlene Nomura.

Bring your recent work to the next meeting and enter it in the Mini Show for $4. Proceeds benefit our high school scholarship fund.

Maria and Luigi Bonoli were the lucky raffle winners, receiving one of the demonstration panels created by Caryl.

Member News

Araks Johannes was invited by LA Art Association to present five of her Portraiture/Figurative works at the LA Art Show in January (shown at left). "It was a great experience to see my work among works of some of the best artists in the world (dead and alive)!”, commented Araks.

GAA members, Helena Bowman, Vivianne Bowman and Diane Carter went to see Araks’ work on display at the LA Art Show. "It was actually two shows and the amount of work and styles was dizzying.” — Helena Bowman

Araks was also recently interviewed by Art Quench magazine (http://artquenchmagazine.com/). We'll be watching for the final article.
