New Report and Monitoring Tool: HIV, HCV, TB and Harm Reduction in Prisons

According to a new report from Harm Reduction International, there is an enormous gap between health and human rights standards and their effective implementation in places of detention. The report identifies some of the most important human rights and public health standards relating to HIV, HCV and TB in prisons, and the vital role of harm reduction provision in ensuring them.

HIV-positive patients in the U.S. will now be able to donate their organs to save the lives of others. Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore has been given the green light to become the first center in the country to perform HIV-positive to HIV-positive transplants.

Gilead Sciences has filed for approval of Truvada as pre-exposure prophylaxis with the European Medicines Agency (EMA). If validated by the EMA, PrEP will be approved for use along with safer sex practices in all 28 member states of the European Union.

Polish investigators report that there is a significant relationship between HIV viral load and the risk of neurosyphilis. Incidence of the sexually transmitted infection syphilis is high among patients with HIV, most especially among men who have sex with men, and incidence has risen since 2000.
