Artist Talk: Ellen McFadden

Join the Portland Art Museum, for an artist talk with Painter Ellen McFadden. McFadden is deeply influenced by Constructivist art. Her recent paintings, whose titles evoke regional Native tribes, locations, and terms, create tension and optical play through shape, color, and the rectilinear confines of the two-dimensional canvas. She has taught design in the Pacific Northwest, Iowa, and most recently, at the Suzhou Art & Design Technology Institute in China.

Community Discussion: The Role of Images in Environmental Campaigns

Newspace Center for Photography, in collaboration with BARK, will host a community discussion on the pointed uses of images in environmental activist campaigns. The discussion will consider a range of questions including: Do images have the transformative abilities that photojournalists have long-claimed? How to organizations and community groups utilize images to forward social change? How are they manipulated or staged to align with a campaign agenda? When does the image cross over to the realm of propaganda, and what are the implications to activists?
