Happy Leap Day!

and welcome to our fourth newsletter.
Leap Day - a day when every four years women can ask their men to marry them.
It's 2016. How many other archaic, patriarchal traditions do we still need to dismantle?

A lot has changed in the 30 years that Sutton Women's Centre has been running, and we've achieved so much ourselves. But there's still a lot of work to be done in Sutton and the surrounding area to help women.

Our 30th anniversary year is coming to an end
- and we want to thank you for all your support, and share with you our plans for the future.

Telephone counselling - update

Our Telephone Counselling service is growing steadily, with 5 women currently being counselled.
The Telephone Counselling service was given funding at the end of 2015 by the Sutton Community Fund. The Community Fund is funded by Sutton Council, and is administered by Sutton Centre for the Voluntary Centre.

First Give with Carshalton Boys

Trustees from Sutton Women Centre visited Carshalton High School for Boys to give a presentation on the Centre and the great work it does.

The students asked some fantastic questions and gave our Trustees a memorable round of applause at the end.

We look forward to their entry on our behalf in the First Give Presentation in April.

One of our Trustees also recently presented to the Sutton Women's Institute, who were shocked to learn about the level of domestic violence in the borough.

Fundraising Plans

Our Christmas Creativity Weekend in December in St Nicholas Centre Sutton was popular as ever.

We were lucky enough to be featured as a Green Token scheme community group at ASDA Sutton and ASDA Beddington in January and February too. We're very grateful to ASDA and their Community Champion and it was a pleasant surprise and a great start to 2016.

We are planning to be at several fairs this year, including the Environmental Fair and Beddington Fair, so look out on our Facebook and Twitter pages for our next fundraising events.

Projects and Activities

Our Women's Writers Group has been seeking a tutor to work with them. After receiving a grant of £500 from the Arts Network Sutton, the group will work with a tutor once a month for a year.

Any woman interested in joining should contact the Centre.

Smile Centre

This is our regular feature 'Smile Centre', a section of our newsletter that is designed to bring a smile to your face - and sometimes that's hard in the face of all that's going on!

Online fundraising has been used countless times to raise money for good causes since it exploded onto the scene a number of years ago. Recently it was used to raise money by the actors of the Radio 4 drama The Archers, after a storyline revolving around domestic abuse. With more awareness to these issues, more people can work together to solve them.
We'd like to thank you for taking an interest in the Sutton Women's Centre. These newsletters will come out every 3 months, and if you have a suggestion or something to contribute, please email us
