Cobalt Blue Victorian Poison Bottle...
An Inspiration

A vintage bottle from Etsy Shop: The Curious Magpie

As a locally known sea glass jewelry artisan I have been requested to write a novel with sea glass as part of the main plot. Forthcoming: a lovely, brilliant, cobalt blue piece of sea glass from a Victorian poison bottle wends its way through time in a tale of murder, love and heartbreak.

The blizzard Jonas has left the Mid-Atlantic covered in a thick blanket of snow. Needless to say, when the groundhog did not see his shadow this morning, those still embalmed in snow, were near cheering at the thought of an early spring.  In the Mid-Atlantic, USA and North East, we are more than ready to ‘drive the cold winter away’ (to quote a Loreena McKennit holiday song)

What does the Green Man have to do with this, you ask? The Green Man represents birth, death and rebirth in all facets.  Particularly in nature. There is a classic battle between winter and summer with the Holly King and Oak King.

Today is Groundhog’s Day or Imbolc by pagans and wicccans.  It is the waning of winter and the beginning of Spring. In several cultures, from this February day throughout the Lenten season, it is definitely time to drive the cold winter away.  It is time for the Straw Bear and other Jack in the Green like figures to drive winter away to permit the beginning of Spring to arrive. Even with the recent blizzard, snowdrops are pushing through the snow and gracing the mid-Atlantic with early signs of Spring.

Recipe from
The Blossoming

Sylvia makes a red, white and blue potato salad vinaigrette for the annual Bayside 4thof July picnic in The Blossoming. The recipe is below.

Enjoy!

Patriotic Herbed
Potato Salad

1 lb. baby white potatoes
1 lb. baby red potatoes
1 lb. baby blue potatoes
Juice of two lemons
2 tsp. kosher salt

2 tsp. stone ground Dijon mustard
¼ c. minced red onion
½ c.  good, virgin Olive oil

2 Tablespoons fresh minced parsley

2 Tablespoons fresh minced basil

2 Tablespoons fresh minced dill (other herbs can be substituted to your personal taste)

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Boil potatoes until they can be pierced through easily (20-30 minutes).

While potatoes are boiling, create vinaigrette in a large bowl with the remaining ingredients. Stir well to combine the herbs, seasonings, lemon juice and olive oil.

When potatoes are done, drain well and toss in the vinaigrette. This salad can be served hot, lukewarm or cold.
