Look between the trees
Welcome to the workweek readers,

As I prepare to enter the third trimester my many-miled mountain running weeks and focused training for the upcoming rock season continue in blessedly balmy California sunshine. This expanding spirit vehicle is ever faithful. However, these days I am witness to my deep fear of what is in store in the coming months. Rather than continue to reinforce and propagate these fears by speaking them like spells repeatedly in my head I've recalled some salient lessons about managing fear that the mountains have taught me.

One metaphor most apropos to the season is what my dad ingrained in me about tree skiing in the Crystal Mountain side country as a child: Look between the trees. I learned if I obsessed about the closely-spaced trees, staring at them as if they were about to jump toward me I would invariably run into them. Conversely, if I focused on the often narrow and icy path between the trees I'd navigate my way through them unscathed often finding a flowing rhythm while doing so.

Here, in addition to a digest of posts on the ever more popular pregnant athlete topic, I'll introduce a new set of services spawned out of fear and intended to help my clients learn to befriend their own trepidation.

B
Fear doesn't move
How do you cope with fear?

Knowledge of the autonomic nervous system is the key to sustainable, joyful endurance practice and to skillful navigation of trying situations alike. Gain some concrete coping mechanisms refined by testing through four rounds of HELL Week, twenty-five mountain ultras, and many harrowing alpine climbs - not to mention the many anxieties of pregnancy. Without denying or ignoring fear, one can alchemically transform it.

Using specialized manual and mental techniques, I'll teach you what the ANS is, why understanding it is key to calm and safe mountain travel, and how to control yours to experience mastery of fear, deeper rest, and a happier adrenal system.
Blog highlights
It is rare that I engage with a client who needs to learn how to push themselves. Much more often I spend my coaching time persuading driven athletes that strategic rest has its benefits. Those folks have been enjoying the meditation series.

On the flip side, highly-capable pregnant women are often taught to fear their powerful bodies. I continued to dispel self-fear and rebuild our social notions of pregnancy in the pregnant athlete series this month.
Look forward to some exciting news about my writing coming in a couple months. I just can't wait.
