Mental Health Care: Violence and Aggressive Behaviour - Risk Assessment, Documentation and Communication (Part 4)

As victims or perpetrators, mental health patients are vulnerable to the risks associated with violence and aggressive behaviour. In inpatient environments in particular, violence and aggressive behaviour create a significant safety risk for staff, other people, and the person exhibiting the behaviour.

Risk Assessment:
Appropriate and effective risk assessment is a process that is underpinned by certain key principles. Screening for risk of violence and aggressive behaviours should be standard procedure for all persons with mental illness who are seen in mental healthcare environments. With the involvement of the person and their family, where possible, the risk assessment is the first step in designing a treatment or intervention plan that recognizes the person's unique condition, triggers and care needs which is also mindful of the safety of the person, staff, and others. All of this should be done without labeling the person as being violent or aggressive.

Staffing Office Reminders:

Work-Related Injury:
A reminder to all healthcare providers that if you are injured while working with Carecor, you are required to report the injury immediately to the unit Charge Nurse - also determine if they require you to complete a hospital incident report. Secondly, you must inform the Carecor Staffing Office about the injury. If the injury is minor, first aid may be provided. If the injury is more serious, the Charge Nurse will advise you to go to the Emergency Department of the hospital where you are assigned. In the event the doctor completes a WSIB Form 8, please email a copy of this to the Carecor Staffing Office. Additional follow up will be done by Carecor for the purposes of completing a WSIB Form 7. In this instance, your status will be 'on hold' and you will be required to have clearance from a doctor that indicates you are able to return to your normal duties.

Non-Work Related Injury: In the event you are calling in to report you are unable to work due to an injury that occurred other than while you were working with Carecor, your status will be placed 'on hold' and any booked assignments will be cancelled. To return to work, you will be required to provide a doctor's note indicating you can return to your normal duties. You can email the doctor's note to the Carecor Staffing Office.

Last Minute Cancellation Due to Injury/Illness: In the event you cancel your assignment due to illness/injury within 2-3 hours before the start of your shift, the Staffing Office will place your status 'on hold' and will request that you provide a doctor's note before you can be assigned to work.

Doctor's notes can be emailed to the Carecor Staffing Office:  StaffingCoordinators@carecor.com

WELL DONE!

Priscilla Bernardo, RN:
"As the manager of Rouge Valley Emergency Department, I just wanted to pass along that I had a great experience with Priscilla Bernardo, one of your RNs. She demonstrated exceptional grace and team work when she was asked to go to a surgical floor instead of working in the ED. Initially she had concerns but once I explained to her that she would be looking after the same type of patients as she was going to have in the ED (medical admits) she was fine. Thanks very much."

(Manager, Rouge Valley Health System, Centenary Site-Emergency Department)
