The History of ServeFest
ServeFest is Saturday, April 23rd

ServeFest is a day when churches partner to serve their communities in practical and meaningful ways. The event began as separate events held at churches in Howard, Anne Arundel, and Harford counties, but has grown each year and now brings together over 4,000 people and 120 churches across five counties and Baltimore City.

This year, ServeFest has a two-pronged focus. As in past years, there will continue to be tons of projects all around each participating county/city—projects that anyone can join in to serve the community. In addition, because ServeFest is aimed at igniting a movement of people who live a life of serving in Jesus’ name, everyone should feel empowered and encouraged to serve their own neighbors in whatever way God is leading you.

The beautification of the Somerset Manor neighborhood is one of the ServeFest projects again this year. To take part, visit

Show Some Love this Valentine's Day and
Donate to our Stock the Pantry project

Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Stock the Pantry project so far! Some of your contributions of canned and boxed food, paper goods and health and hygiene supplies were already put to use when our residents were housebound due to the historic snow produced by Winter Storm Jonas. That means we are still in need of donations and will continue to collect items to help the low-income families of HDGHA and the surrounding community. The residents of Somerset Manor appreciate your generosity!

Donations collected through Valentine's Day, February 14, will count towards Sydney Biggs' Stock the Pantry Project, and can help her achieve her Girl Scout Gold Award!

You can help Stock the Pantry in one of two ways:
  1. Bring a donation of items (see our website for a list of needed items) to the lobby of the Housing Authority Administration Building (101 Stansbury Court, Havre de Grace, MD 21078 • 410- 939-2097) during regular business hours. Special pickups may be arranged.
  2. Make a tax deductible cash donation directly to the Housing Authority. All donations will be used to stock the pantry.

Introducing Ellen Kunzelman
Ellen is our new Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS)
Program Coordinator

Ellen started with HDGHA in January. She comes to us from the Harford Community Action Agency where she was a financial case worker, and before that a food pantry coordinator at an organization in New York.  That highly specialized experience will be put to good use in her new role of FSS program coordinator!  Ellen will work with participating families and community partners to provide the tailored services, education and training they need to be economically self sufficient without government subsidies or assistance.

She says, "As a dedicated caseworker with 7 1/2 years of experience working with non-profit organizations, I have helped many families gain financial independence through goal achievement, credit repair and homeownership. I am passionate about helping low income families and excited to help the residents of HDGHA achieve their goals, too."

PCC Spotlight:
Meet Our Community Partners
by Yvette Valentin, Family Services Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna

The Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna (HHS) Homeownership Program provides an opportunity for families or individuals who may not be eligible to purchase a home through conventional lenders to own their own home.  As Family Services Coordinator at HHS, Yvette helps guide potential homeowners through this program.

One of the ways HHS checks to see if a potential homeowner qualifies is to pull their credit report. Financial counselors make a huge impact in this area, as they can decipher what the reports mean & advise potential homeowners on the best way to move forward.

Yvette says, "Owning a home offers so much more than stability and security to people; that's why our partnership with the Havre de Grace Housing Authority’s Family Self-Sufficiency program is so important. FSS workshops are FREE to attend so participants can get help from counselors and learn how they can achieve their goal of owning a home no matter what their credit report shows.  We are grateful for the FSS education and training which keeps clients on track when their circumstances seem overwhelming."
