INTO THE SUNSHINE

Jana C.

During the winter months it can get downright depressing when we have several days in a row of rain or cloudiness. Although we are fortunate to live in a climate that offers a relatively high number of days of winter sunshine, we can still suffer from the effects of those that are dark and dreary.

Ever feel like curling up under a nice warm blanket, taking a nap and just keeping things simple when the weather is bleak? If so, then you're likely experiencing the naturally resulting dip in serotonin levels (the feel good hormone) and the equally natural increase in melatonin, (the sleepy hormone). Sunlight boosts serotonin, and darkness boosts melatonin. This is a normal cycle our bodies go through and is part of the circadian rhythm that regulates our sleep and wake schedule.

During the winter months, pay particular attention to the sun. Make sure you get out into the sunshine for at least 15 minutes, particularly after a day or two of wintry weather. (Longer than 15 minutes requires sunscreen!) Boost your benefits by walking for those 15 minutes and you'll not only reap the rewards from physical activity, you'll also boost your mood and increase your absorption of vitamin D, which helps keeps your bones healthy as well as help you settle in for a better night's sleep.

Preparation

I’m running for Team Clubhouse at this year’s H-E-B Alamo Run Fest. I am so happy and proud to participate in the Run, because exercise and staying healthy is important to me, and I get to represent SA Clubhouse in the event. This article is the first in a series about my experience with the Alamo Run Fest: Preparation.

First there was the profile pic. I had Linda snap a photo of me doing a yoga pose. Luckily, Brandon had told me before that I was going to be photographed, so I mentally prepared myself for the shot, haha. In fact, I even looked up athletic poses on the internet before we got out to shoot. Yoga seemed to work for me!

We have a Clubhouse Pledge Form for the Run Fest, and it looks awesome! It has wonderful pictures and is vivid and informational. The whole campaign for Team Clubhouse makes me excited for the support we’ll get for the Run Fest. The donations we’ll receive are paramount. Each and every donation allows us to continue running our facility and providing support to all of our members.

In addition to the Pledge Form, everyone who runs has a profile on Crowdrise.com to make it easier for people to donate online. My yoga picture is up there, as well as the donations I’ve already collected. Nathan handed five pledge forms and encouraged me to set a goal for myself: $100 seems ideal. So that is my collection goal.

I also posted about the Run Fest on my Facebook page, asking my friends for donations. More than a few people have already liked the post! I’ve had two people donate on my Crowdrise Page so far. It just really makes my day that people are willing to donate for our cause.

I plan to walk and jog during the race. To prepare for the physical exertion, I’ve been doing stretches, exercises, and jogging in the weeks leading up to the race, so as not to run short of breathe too quickly. Stretching is important, because it sets a good foundation for my jogging. I can only jog in small increments; a block or so, then my lungs, heart, and legs begin to protest. However, it is getting easier with practice.

I hope you join me in saying good luck to all the participants of the Alamo Run Fest. Go Team Clubhouse!
