From our field to your table. Winter CSA 2015-16
  Urban Roots Farm
Weekly Field Notes
I am truly in love with farming and the community surrounding this sweet little piece of land. Last season Andy Cline created a wonderful video about our farm. Thank you, Andy.

Farm Talk Notes from your farmer

WHAT is up with this wind? I feel like we should all be wearing hardhats. Since 2010, I don't sleep on windy nights and require lots of deep breaths on windy days. I know there is not much I can do if a tunnel flies away like a kite (we do have them anchored really well) but that doesn't make my fear go away.
Summer shares are on sale now! Follow this link to sign up: Summer CSA 2016
We have been very busy gearing up for spring. I encourage all of you to take a moment and go check out the high tunnels when you pick up your share, or swing by anytime. The tunnels and the greenhouse are a very happy place to be during these grey, cold days. You can smell spring!
Last summer we formed a Core Group between CSA members to help us with feedback, marketing and events, plus all kinds of other great things that emerged from this crew. For example the video above, Jay (our CSA liaison), Cocktail Nights, and our new payment plan. As we are in the middle of this CSA season; I would like to get together with those interested for a short meeting of the minds. Please let me know if this sounds like something you're interested in. Next meeting will be March 1st 5-6:30 here at our house.

Value of your share:

We thought a few of you might enjoy knowing the retail value of your CSA share each week. I must say... there are some things you can't put a price on. Like being able to ask the person who grew your food anything you want to know about the food your putting in your body. Also, knowing that this food IS local, naturally grown, fresh and harvested within a day of CSA pick-up. I also can't put a price on the economic importance of supporting each other with our dollars.  So, that said, here you will find the retail price of your veggie share each week.

This week $42.00
Weekly average  $49.00

When you get home and can't remember what the funny looking veggie was, look no further!

Loose leaf lettuce: thin leaf, light green and red lettuce. This is great to mix with your greens mix for an amazing salad.
Carrots: sweet baby carrots, don't peal!
Kale: dark green leaves, sweet flavor, can be eaten raw or cooked.
Spinach: Round smooth dark green leaves. Very sweet flavor.
Garlic: Head of garlic, this will store for weeks.
Shoots: Sunflower or pea shoots, look like sprouts. Eat like sprouts.

Leeks: They look like long green onions and taste sweet. You can eat the white and light green stalk.
Herb Mix: We made a baggy of herbs for you.
Bok Choi: little choi plants, great in a stir fry.
Onions: small sweet candy onions
Lemon Grass: Grassy looking stalk. The leaves can be used for tea or in place of bay leaves in soup. The white meaty stalk can be eaten and placed in dishes.
