International Bagpipe Day

Thursday 10 March

"International Bagpipe Day is now a well established and increasingly popular event. Every March 10th you are invited to go out and play your pipes – anywhere, anyhow to anyone!

Continuing on from the success of the first ever International Bagpipe Day in 2012, March 10th was chosen to be a day to celebrate the world’s bagpipes and piping traditions. With over 130 different kinds of bagpipe played worldwide, the Bagpipe Society invite pipers everywhere to organise local events - talks, lectures, school visits, museum events, pipers’ picnics, concerts, gigs, ceilidhs and folk bals.

The BagSoc are also planning the Great Bagpipe Convergence. All pipers are invited to go out on March 10th at noon local time, play their pipes, and then post a photo or video on their facebook page."

Lost Trades Fair

Saturday 12 March

The first Lost Trades Fair was held in 2014 to showcase traditional, rare and unusual arts and trades and actively promotes the people who practise these skills. The Fair is a once a year event, held on labour day weekend - and has been specially created for traditional makers and tradespeople who are working (or have worked) at their traditional trade as their career.

The Lost & Rare Trades Fair is an opportunity to meet real makers - learn how things are made, see, hear, touch and experience craftsmanship, skill, artistry and talk with the makers themselves about what they do.

Club member, Pat Lyons will be along to showcase uilleann pipes (& no doubt his reed-making knowledge). Pat has a concert slot at 12.30 pm on the Saturday and would welcome a couple of others to join him. Best to email him first though.

Call for UNESCO recognition of Uilleann Piping

The Irish State has recently ratified the UNESCO Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). That Convention established a ‘Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’, and Ireland is in the process of nominating the art of UILLEANN PIPING for inclusion on that list. Na Píobairí Uilleann is liaising with the Government in preparing the nomination.

More details here.

Bagpipe Map

"The Bagpipe Map was officially launched at the International Bagpipe Conference in Glasgow on 27 February.

This map is an ongoing project whose goal is to create a map of all the currently known depictions of bagpipes to be seen in publicly accessible buildings in Britain.

This is an ongoing project which relies for its growth on a community of contributors. If you know of, or happen to encounter on your travels, a carving or painting of a piper that is not yet included here then you are welcome to join this community and make a contribution."

'Reclaimed'

A new CD of Lowland & Border Piping

"This is an exciting new venture for the Lowland & Border Pipers' Society; produced by Iain MacInnes and Hamish Moore, it contains 17 tracks, including specially recorded performanaces and some 'historical' archive recordings."
