Australia Day Award Winners

Congratulations to our outstanding volunteers on their well-deserved wins at Council's 2016 Australia Day Awards.

Redhead Sustainable Neighbourhood was awarded 2016 Community Group of the Year.
The Redhead Sustainable Neighbourhood have become an integral part of community life in Redhead.  Their many initiatives include a regular newsletter, an ANZAC Centenary project, practical support for local organisations, social and educational events, clean ups and providing a practical voice for their community.

The West Wallsend District Sustainable Neighbourhood Group was awarded 2016 Community Event of the Year for their 'Old Waste, New Art' Competition.
The Old Waste New Art Competition is an excellent  initiative that combines community participation, sustainability principles and showcases our community's creativity.  The West Wallsend District Sustainable Neighbourhood Group have created an event that was innovative, well managed and demonstrates some wonderful ways we can all be more sustainable.

Help flood the internet with neighbourliness

Our friends at Neighbour Day are planning a big social media event to promote this year's celebrations, and are looking for our help.
  • Download and print this A4 Neighbour Day sign.  Let us know if you need a print out.
  • Stand at your front door, and get a friend to take a photo of you holding the sign.
  • Email us your photo by Wednesday 24 February, and we will pass it on to be published on Neighbour Day's social media and website.
It's also time to confirm your plans for Neighbour Day for on (or around) 27 March.  Please let us know what your group is planning.
Clean Up Australia Day

Clean Up Australia Day is coming up on Sunday 6 March.  Please be sure to let us know if your group is managing a Clean Up site.

Find and keep new volunteers

This training session is tailored specifically for Sustainable Neighbourhood groups to show you the best ways to:
  • attract new volunteers;
  • define volunteer roles;
  • keep volunteers engaged and utilise their talents; and
  • reward participation.

Book early.  Places are limited.  Any spots remaining after 19 Feb will be offered to all Lake Macquarie community groups.
There are still a few Super Tuesday sites left in Lake Macquarie and Newcastle if you'd like to count some bikes and earn some cash for your group.  Visit the Bicycle Network's website for all the details.
Hunter Water Community Consultative Forum

The Hunter Water Community Consultative Forum is an advisory body that provides direct communication between Hunter Water and its customers on key issues relating to Hunter Water's planning and operations.
 
The Sustainable Neighbourhood Alliance has recently accepted an invitation to join the forum to represent the interests of Sustainable Neighbourhood Groups, and to help disseminate the information provided to our network.

The forum meets three times a year.  Please let us know if your Sustainable Neighbourhood Group would like relevant issues raised through the forum.
