StoryCenter Public Health Update: February 2016

Public Health Webinar Series Continues!

Back by popular demand, StoryCenter’s six-part Public Health Webinar Series has been scheduled every other month in 2016, beginning in April. For many years, our organization has been supporting community practitioners and researchers as they explore how storytelling can enhance public health education, community mobilization, and advocacy. Learn about how our workshop-based production methods enable participants to create compelling first-person narratives as short videos, and gain insight into the many applications of digital storytelling, for public health. Sign up now for a discount off the individual webinar price!

Recent News … Youth Like Me Project Shared at SBCC Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Our colleague Leonard Gobah with Marie Stopes International, Ghana presented an abstract that we submitted to the Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) Summit held this week in Ethiopia. Watch stories from the project and read more about our collaboration with MSI-Ghana, which positions young people and their stories as key ingredients in sexual and reproductive health education, advocacy, and the expansion of youth-friendly clinical services.

Transgender Women of Color Speak Out on Accessing Health Care

We’ve kicked off our public health work for 2016 with an exciting new partnership with the Transgender Law Center’s Positively Trans Project, a constituent-led organizing effort rooted in the capacity of trans community members to form their own networks, tell their own stories, and develop advocacy strategies in response to inequities, stigma, and discrimination. We are excited to be bringing our digital storytelling workshop process to Positively Trans, as a way of supporting the trans community in sharing stories that will be used to organize their broader community and and advocate for trans rights. Stay tuned for story examples in the coming weeks!

Bringing Stories of Health Disparities Into View

Last fall, we were pleased to have the opportunity to work with the Colorado Trust’s Health Equity Advocacy grantees as part of the Tri-County Health Network’s goal of bringing digital storytelling to organizations across the state. In a series of workshops, we trained Network staff to enable them to offer workshops to ranchers, farmers, schoolteachers, law enforcement personnel, students, and more– in the interest of surfacing and bringing attention to individual stories about the impact of health disparities in local communities. Participants created stories to share with their communities and to acquire first-hand knowledge of what they will eventually be asking others to do– a key element of StoryCenter’s ethical practice guidelines.  Watch workshop participant Cat Jaffee’s story about community gardening in Denver.
