The Plant Biosecurity CRC was established with PB IP Ltd as a wholly owned subsidiary, with the intent of commercialising Intellectual Property (IP) from both PBCRC and the previous CRC for National Plant Biosecurity. Our IP register has quite a few pieces of Intellectual Property with commercial potential that the Management and Board of PB IP are working through. In the last year, we have employed John Thorne to lead our commercialisation efforts under the direction of the PB IP Board. Read more from Michael about the value of partnerships and commercialisation of PBCRC research.

Plant Biosecurity CRC Science Exchange 2016
- It’s a tree change!

The rumours are true – the next Plant Biosecurity CRC Science Exchange (SX16) will be held at the RACV Goldfields Resort in Creswick Victoria, 25-28 October this year. You can expect great science, plenty of networking and some surprises. Read more.

CAPACITY BUILDING

Biosecurity Built on Science! Look back at 2015 in our first Year in Review

PBCRC is delighted to bring you our first Year in Review publication which shines a light on PBCRC research in 2015 and the value of biosecurity RD&E to Australia.

In the Year in Review 2015 you can discover the impact of PBCRC research through case studies and research snapshots. 2015 saw the great majority of our research projects up and running. By the end of 2015 there were 138 research projects in total with our 27 Participants from government, universities and industry. We also focused on extending our collaborations and looking at the commercial potential of research.

We hope you will enjoy reading about the research and how it is being delivered to have practical impact, assisting government, industry and communities to improve Australia's biosecurity shield.

Smart biosecurity science – have your say on the future of plant biosecurity RD&E

Smart biosecurity science will identify an agreed pathway to a long-term plant biosecurity research, development and extension (RD&E) model for Australia, building on thirteen years of PBCRC work.

PBCRC has commissioned the Australian Farm Institute and Currie Communications to consult widely with government, industry and research stakeholders in the development of an independent options paper. This paper will provide the foundation for a recommendation to government on how best to deliver smart biosecurity science that grows markets together.

The options paper will be released on 4 April 2016, with stakeholder submissions invited until 9 May. Stay informed and have your say by registering your details at the new Smart biosecurity science web page: www.pbcrc.com.au/smartbiosecurityscience.

Fruit fly in focus at forum

Fruit fly was the topic of the day when 33 experts from around Australia met in Adelaide for a forum on the biology of fruit flies. It was an important opportunity to share research findings ranging from baiting and fumigation to genomics. Read more.

Congrats Ryan – Three Minute Thesis Winner at K-State

PBCRC PhD student Ryan Schmid is a winner! Congratulations to Ryan for taking out Kansas State University’s first campus-wide Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition, with a presentation about his Hessian fly research. Read more.

VIDEO: Project Profile from PhD Papori Barua

Papori Barua is a PBCRC PhD student undertaking research into fungal spore incursions at the University of Western Australia. In this short video she talks about the likelihood and means by which fungal spores enter Australia, as well as effective methods of decontamination.

Monitoring a major threat to the potato industry

A PBCRC project that analyses natural dispersal pathways of pests is working with the Australian potato industry to investigate the potential for the destructive tomato-potato psyllid to enter Australia from New Zealand. The project was featured in the Feb/March 2016 issue of Potatoes Australia magazine. Read this in Potatoes Australia magazine on page 24 (pdf).

Workshop: Next generation sequencing

You are invited to a PBCRC workshop on Next Generation Sequencing technologies for the surveillance and diagnosis of viral pathogens. The workshop will be held at AgriBio (La Trobe University) in Melbourne on 19 April 2016. This free event is mainly aimed at diagnosticians from government laboratories and universities. RSVPs are essential. More information and RSVP here.

Computer modelling pests - papers available online

The International Congress on Modelling and Simulation in 2015 was a great opportunity to present PBCRC research on modelling for surveillance and eradication of invasive species, and unmanned aerial systems (drones). PBCRC researcher Dr Grant Hamilton, from the Queensland University of Technology, led the biosecurity-related sessions and Postdoctoral Fellow Peter Baxter presented. Papers are now available online - read more.

Forum: Crop biosecurity priorities

The National Plant Biosecurity RD&E Strategy Implementation Committee forum on 14-15 July 2016 will bring together plant industries, regulators, policy makers and research leaders to share perspectives on problems and solutions in plant biosecurity. The aim is to better align research to the needs of plant industries and government.

The forum will be held at AgriBio in Melbourne and will provide an opportunity to network and foster partnerships with others who want to advance plant biosecurity science. For more information email vludowici@phau.com.au or call
02 6215 7712. Information about registration will be available soon, in the meantime, save the date.
