Message in a Bottle - Behind the work of Liu Zhuoquan
floor talk with Luise Guest
Wednesday 24 February 11am

This year the Ten Cubed project has expanded to include an additional ten international artists. To begin this new endeavour, the extraordinary works of Beijing artist Liu Zhuoquan will be exhibited at Ten Cubed from 23 February.

In Liu Zhuoquan’s Beijing studio, ordinary and mundane objects become extraordinarily delicate and beautiful installations through the intervention of the artist’s skill and his astute observations of the world around him. Liu reinvents the ancient technique of 'neihua', the ‘inside bottle painting’ once used to paint delicate scenes inside snuff bottles in the Qing imperial court to transform found objects. Discarded bottles, light globes and street lamps are painted with beautiful and intricate representations of flora and fauna or more sinister subjects that reflect aspects of life in contemporary China and its complex political history.

Liu Zhuoquan is a rapidly rising international artist whose works are held in many international collections including Uli Sigg collection, Switzerland; White Rabbit Collection, Sydney; Xu Longsen collection, China; China Art Projects, China, England and Australia; Fine Arts Documentary Organisation, China and Lin Yunqiang collection, Indonesia.
