Information regarding assaults on women in North Austin

At this time APD can confirm that a male subject approaches women from behind and then either pushes them down or in other cases, grabs them. The general description of this man is a Hispanic male, English speaker, about 5’7” – 5’9” in height, 150 pounds, early to mid-20s, short black hair.  There is a common theme of him wearing a hoodie and either a face mask or bandana to cover the lower part of his face.  He may be armed with a knife. If he’s not wearing a hoodie, he wears dark, long-sleeved shirts or jackets.
 
There have been a total of six incidents APD is aware of beginning Dec. 27, 2015 to Feb. 8, 2016. The incidents all range from: Sexual Assaults, Attempted Sexual Assault and Aggravated Robbery.
 
All of the cases are being investigated individually, however they all have a common theme and could all be associated with one another. At this time APD has no leads and is asking that if anyone sees something suspicious or has information about these crimes to call 9-1-1 immediately. Detectives are asking anyone with any information regarding this incident to call the Sex Crimes Unit Tip Line at 512-974-5095 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS or text "Tip 103" + your message to CRIMES.
 
While these incidents are happening in North Austin (Duval, 183, Jollyville area), APD is asking everyone to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Some additional general safety tips are provided below.
           
Basic Safety Tips:
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• If you have your hands full, have a plan in case you are attacked.
• Limit distractions. Keep the volume down on your headphones or use just one earphone in order to hear and be alerted to approaching hazards.
• If attacked yell in order for someone to hear you.
• Exercise with a friend. In case of an emergency, you can help each other out.
• If you have to exercise solo, let at least one friend or family member know your route, expected return time, and description of your clothing.
• Make sure your cell phone is fully charged.
• Walk in well-lit and populated areas if possible. If not, have a light source handy.
• Carry identification and include name, phone number, and medical information (allergies, medications, medical history) Consider listing an emergency contact number.
• Use discretion when acknowledging strangers.
• If you believe someone is following you, call 9-1-1 as you move to a safe place. Stay on the phone until police arrive.
• Report any suspicious persons to 9-1-1.
