Ash Wednesday. As disciples of Jesus, we are invited to the discipline of Lent—which includes self-examination and repentance, prayer and fasting, sacrificial giving and works of love—so that we may acknowledge our need for God’s mercy and grace. Please join us this Ash Wednesday, February 10, as we begin the Lenten journey. The evening starts with a Soup Supper at 6:00 p.m. Please bring your favorite soup to share, and bread will be furnished. Ash Wednesday worship will follow at 7:00 p.m. There will be no other activities on Ash Wednesday evening.
ELCA World Hunger for Lent. The ELCA is kicking off a year of emphasis for World Hunger Relief with a special Lenten initiative. We can participate by using a giving calendar as in the past two years. The calendar, distributed last Sunday and available online, increases awareness of the many gifts we receive from God while helping those who are hungry. For the forty days of Lent, count the items listed for each day and add that many coins to a bank. On Easter Sunday, March 27, please bring the coins to church. All proceeds will go for ELCA World Hunger Relief. (Calendar adapted from Rhonda Kindig, The Lutheran, 2013)
Lenten Bible Study. During Lent, Taylor will lead a Bible study on Thursdays from 12:30-1:30 p.m. We will focus on different parts of the Old Testament and learn how we can relate these teachings to our daily lives. The Bible studies begin this Thursday, February 11. Please bring a lunch dish to share and your questions!
Last week to complete your Time and Talent form. The 2016 Time and Talent survey is coming to a close and we need your input! If you have not yet completed this year's form either online or in church, please do it today. Have each member of your family, including children of all ages, fill out the form by going to http://go.abidinggracedfw.org/t+t or picking up a paper form at church. Thank you.
Valentine's Day Crafts. Join Taylor after church this Sunday, February 14, to make Valentine's Day cards and crafts for our friends at Mid Cities Care Corp. We'll meet in the Education Building following the service from 11:30 to 12:30 for crafts, snacks and fun. All ages are welcome to participate—the more, the merrier!
Bunco. Ladies, have you heard the word Bunco and wanted to know more about the game? If so, please come Sunday, February 21, 3:00 p.m. at the church for the first ladies bunco day. Please bring a snack to share and a wrapped dollar gift.
2016 Grace Gathering. The ELCA Grace Gathering will be held in in New Orleans, August 10-13. To be held in partnership with the 2016 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, the Grace Gathering will bring people together from all across the ELCA. Participants will see the church in action, worship with churchwide assembly voting members, engage in experiential learning and attend a variety of workshops that will equip congregations and synods with tools to prepare for observances of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation next year. Registration information is available online.
North Texas Senior Fest: Reformation Heroes—Then and Now. The North Texas SeniorFest 2016 will take place on February 27 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Plano. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m. All Lutherans age 50+ are invited to attend. Dr. Joel Heck, professor of theology at Concordia University Austin, will be the primary speaker. He will talk about the life and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther as we approach the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. In addition, participants may choose three of six workshops to attend dealing with various educational and inspirational topics. Registration is $25 per person. Additional information is available online. The event is sponsored by ALOA, an inter-Lutheran movement for adult ministry of the LCMS and ELCA.
Thanks, Abiding Grace, for the generous outpouring of baked goods and goodies for our college students. We packed and mailed 20 boxes Monday and the students should receive them Wednesday or Thursday.
Thank you. Bruce and Toni Holte would like to say a huge thank you for all the love and prayers sent our way while Bruce has been in the hospital and recovering. What comfort that was to have you all surrounding us with both those things when we needed it.
Lost and Found. The Lost and Found Basket is overflowing—please check to see if you have something there. The items will be taken to GRACE at the end of February.
