ERDF BIG DATA CORRIDOR BID THROUGH TO NEXT STAGE
The ERDF outline application has been successful and we have been invited to progress to Full Stage Application. The Big Data Corridor (BDC) is a new initiative led by Birmingham City Council in partnership with Aston University, Future Cities Catapult, Centro, Telensa, Innovation Birmingham, local SMEs and community groups of the Eastern Corridor Smart Demonstrator. It aims to create an innovative, connected data marketplace - a new disruptive economy - where SMEs use data to create new applications, services and experiences to serve personalised demand for businesses and communities in the Corridor, generating social and environmental value alongside hard economic impacts.
SMEs will be supported to use data and technologies to create new services, and products that will respond to specific challenges in East Birmingham to deliver to beneficiaries in the Corridor, generating social, environmental and economic value. It will create new businesses, help existing companies expand and provide quality new jobs for local people.

H2020: CITY4AGE KICKS OFF IN MILAN
Digital Birmingham attended the City4Age kick-off meeting, a Horizon 2020 funded project in which Birmingham is a test-bed partner.
The aim of the project is to increase the take-up of digital technologies by people with mild cognitive impairment with an emphasis on prevention and self-care. It will test the use of wearable technologies like 'Withings' watches for collection of personal data on, for instance, mobility and sleep patterns as well as configure beacons in their local community to give them proximity data on local services and activities when they are out and about in their neighbourhood. This unobtrusive means of collecting data about an individual’s movements will provide the basis to support older people to remain active; identify early onset of frailty through data modelling and analysis and prompt more timely and personalised interventions as required.
Birmingham is working with a range of partners to start to shape the pilot which will take place in Washwood Heath and Shard End as part of the Eastern Corridor Smart Demonstrator.

As part of the BBC's Digital Cities week, Birmingham's regular Code Club will play host to a Hack Weekend on 19 & 20 March 2016, where under-19s will be challenged to produce a themed prototype, which will be presented and judged by a panel of tech industry experts.
