Best Practices for PeopleSoft Advising Notes

Have you started to document your advising appointments in the PeopleSoft Advising Notes? If you are not quite sure why we should, or what to include below are some items to consider.

Timely, purposeful advising notes provide:
  • Documentation
  • Context and history
  • Opportunity
  • Information Sharing
  • Progress tracking
  • Ongoing assessment
General Content Suggestions:
  • Focus on facts, events, and relevant information.
  • Document discussions and recommended courses.
  • Cite actions that were requested of the student and require follow-up.
  • Note student transitions, exceptions granted, and/or referrals (try to include context).
  • Note opportunities suggested and information disclosed that may add value to the advising relationship and future interactions.
  • Use caution and discretion when noting highly personal or sensitive matters. When in doubt, leave it out (appropriately document elsewhere).
  • Remember--PeopleSoft Advising Notes are a part of student education records and are subject to FERPA regulations.

This year's conference will be held Monday, April 18th in the Student Union. The application deadline is Friday, March 4, 2016. Visit this website for full details and application submission link.

Study Abroad Workshops

From Eden Taylor, International Learning Opportunities

Why should students study abroad?

Studying abroad is a unique experience during which the student will grow exponentially. Recent studies show that “study abroad alumni have better career outcomes” (Redden 2016) and a “leg up in the job market” (Lasker 2015). It enhances problem solving and cross cultural communication skills, both of which are highly valued by employers.

In order to make advising easier, we have created an online interactive course finder. The course finder is a database that allows the user to search for study abroad courses that have been pre-approved as equivalent to specific Boise State courses. Currently there are over 1,200 pre-approved courses.

Study Abroad 101 is the first step for a student interested in pursuing an experience abroad. The session provides students with a complete overview of the programs available to them. It covers application instructions, financial aid and scholarship information, and how it can benefit their future. Currently, only 1% of students in the United States study abroad, so having an experience abroad can be a strong asset during their job search or graduate school application process.  We want to help our students take advantage of this great opportunity to develop critical new skills and to experience the world! Students can RSVP for Study Abroad 101 workshops by calling International Learning Opportunities at 208-426-2630 or emailing studyabroad@boisestate.edu. For more information on workshop dates and times please visit http://international.boisestate.edu/
