Sunday was a rich day, wasn't it?  As I looked around the sanctuary during both worship and our congregational meeting I marveled at the way that God calls us together and make us into a people, to live for and by the gospel.

A member shared a story with me of what happened during the day that went unnoticed by most of us.  This person didn't understand about the congregational meeting, so preceded to Coffee Hour.  Once there, wondering where everyone else was this person spoke with a new person who had walked into the church and coffee hour because of hearing the joyful music and being touched by the words "safe. open. real." on our signage.  This unexpected encounter between these two strangers turned out to be a radical affirmation of hope and God's presence in both of their lives as they talked together.  And all that happened without us realizing or consciously planning for it.  It's a reminder that God sends us out two by two - or congregation by congregation - like bones of a feet - to be for God in the world, showing hospitality, extending peace, trusting that God will provide.

Worship This Week (Header Image)

This coming Sunday
February 7, 2015
Mark 8:27-9:8

It’s the last Sunday before Lent: Transfiguration Sunday.  The scripture is about change, transformation - how God changes us in order to see wholly and holy.  My question is how does that impact us?  How are we called to transfiguration in faith, how are we called to be part of God’s transformation of the world.

Download the Textual Analysis tool created by Monte to help you study the text on your own HERE.

OCO Public Action in support
of Fremont High School

CAPC Oakland is a member of Oakland Community Organizations (OCO).  The mission of OCO is to develop leaders who build power through their congregations and schools to bring about systemic change and improve the quality of life for their families.

Fremont High School has been the lynch pin target for a systemic effort to revamp the high school education  within Oakland Unified School District to ensure the success of all.

OCO is organizing a night of public action on Monday, February 8th to encourage the leadership of OUSD and our city to not neglect or forget their commitment to improving secondary education here in Oakland.

Contact Monte by EMAIL or phone 520-0746 if you'd like to be involved or go to the action to show your solidarity and demonstrate that as people of faith we care deeply about public education.

During Lent we're offering a weekly Taizé prayer service on Wednesdays for roughly 45 minutes stating at 7pm.  This is a time of communal prayer and chant, with lectio divina readings of scripture and holy texts.  It's a quiet, meditative and participatory environment in which the focus is put upon listen to and for God's voice.  Be sure to un-plug from your cell phone and other devices when you come.

Education :: Faith is a process not just an event

Are you looking for ways to grow in faith or to wrestle with life in community?  Faith can't be lived in a vacuum.  Like embers in a fire, it's in community - life together - that we become alive and shine.  Here are some ways you might find a place and space to grow with others:

CAPC Women's Group
1st, 2nd, 3rd Saturdays at 8:30-10:00am in the Library
