From the Principal
A cracker start! Easily the best start to a school year that I have witnessed, and much of that is due to the superb timetabling and startup organisation by Deputy Principal Carol Mare and her team. I want to thank families for the scheduled meetings prior to startup, coming in to meet with Directors of Learning and sort timetables. Your patience and respect for the process helped us enormously.

The school's preliminary results look great, with considerable improvement once again. Year upon year we are lifting our results. Our student intake comes in at New Zealand average levels and we are lifting them to the highest levels whilst maintaining quality courses and robust standards. Scholarships have increased again with 40 being achieved in 2015 in almost every discipline. Of particular note is the high number being achieved in core subjects: six in English, five in Calculus. Special congratulations must go to Thomas Morrison who was the top New Zealand scholar for Graphics. This is the third student that Mr Paul Bourdot has taught to this honour and it is an amazing achievement by Thomas and Paul.

We are fielding many questions about which devices are "best". Parents are in a difficult position now with such a high variation of devices available. But in short, given the world our children are entering, they should be using one so that it becomes second nature.

Our performance requirements are spelt out in our Academic Guide (on pages 16 and 17). Here are our thoughts as to what type of device a student should be using.
  • We strongly advise that the laptop be one that allows writing (In America they refer to this as inking).
  • If the preference is to use the cloud for the storage and work on the "anywhere, anytime"  principle, then devices like the Surface Pro 3 or 4 are excellent as they allow writing, tablet mode, and are still a full laptop.
  • If the use will be more about heavy processing of data then a bigger capacity is needed. This could be for coding, animations, media etc.
  • In the first years of school a tablet might well suffice as long as it allows good connection to the internet and hence Office 365. It is worth noting that working with Word or Excel when it is the cloud version is slower than working in a local version and can be frustrating. The tablet should allow the addition of a keyboard. Generic can be purchased separately and quite cheaply, some work wirelessly. Chromebooks and the like are not really up to the task.
  • In the senior schoolstudents should be mindful of the university courses they are considering as many courses are  very specific as to the type of device that is required.
  • Multitasking, that is having multiple programmes open simultaneously, requires at least 8GB ram.
  • Students who prefer to use Adobe Creative Cloud on a personal device (rather than school computers in our labs) will need to purchase a separate Adobe student and teacher subscription. BYO devices running Adobe Creative Cloud must have a fast processor, 8GB or more of memory and around 100GB of free storage space. Current Microsoft i7 Surface Pro and Apple Macbook models will deliver good performance. These specs usually imply that the machine has a good graphics card but please check.
  • The bigger the screen the better for design and art based programmes.
  • Macs used to be the preference for art and design based subjects but this is no longer the case, and PCs seem to work better with Office 365.

In summary the choice depends on:
  • The courses you are doing
  • The software you are using for that course
  • The style of use
  • How close the student is to needing to use the machine at tertiary level

Various companies are approaching us to make devices available at discount to our families. We will pass these on to you as they finalise what they are offering. They offer varying levels of support.

Powhiri

New teachers and Year 9 students were welcomed to Long Bay College by staff and students in a powhiri on their first day at the school.

The Long Bay College Kapa Haka group welcomed the students before a haka was performed by the 2016 Prefect Leadership Team. Principal Russell Brooke then welcomed the Year 9 students to the Long Bay College community.

Year 9 Information Evening

Long Bay College will be holding an Information Evening for parents of Year 9 students on Wednesday 24 February.

Classrooms will be open to meet the teachers between 4pm and 6pm. Presentations about Long Bay College and what the year ahead will involve will be held in the Auditorium at 5pm and 6.15pm.

Further information will be posted out or please check the News and Events section on our website for updates.

Timetable Changes

Long Bay College is proud of the curriculum width we provide our students, the quality of our teaching staff and that our average class sizes are well below 30. We have been quick to settle the timetable and have recently been receiving requests from students to make course changes for a variety of reasons.

To facilitate this process we ask that students complete the Request for Timetable Change form that is available on our website, and take it to Reception. Students are to continue to follow their current timetable until they are called by their Director of Learning.

Prefect Camp

Written by Head Girl, Tayla Baxter
Best Three Days of My Life. Yes, I came back from Prefect Camp absolutely shattered, and covered head to toe in bites and bruises, but I would do the entire experience all over again in a heartbeat!

Auckland is renown for its irregular weather cycles, nevertheless we were blessed with pristine summer weather for the entire weekend. The 2016 prefect body was pushed both mentally and physically to their limits with the various team challenges, which comprised of high ropes, puzzle solving, assault walls, tyre swings and flying foxes. Together in our assigned teams we learnt each others strengths and weaknesses; but most importantly how to form unity within our teams to create a functioning and successful unit.

After two eventful and exhausting days, the prefect body learnt a traditional Maori Haka with the assistance from the current Kapa Haka Leaders of Patrick Smith, Tayne Morgan and Byren Short. The haka’s story regards a conversation between a father and son. The elderly father explains no matter how challenging a situation may be, the true answer to success is within yourself.

On behalf of the entire prefect body, I’d like to thank the fantastic staff at Motutapu Outdoor Education Camp. But most importantly our tremendous Long Bay College staff who never seem to run out of energy, humour and enthusiasm. To all year levels considering a prefect position, I cannot emphasise how enough how incredible the entire experience is. I’m looking forward to the year ahead with such an amazing group of prefects by my side. Bring on 2016!

Parent Support Network

This year will see the start of our monthly forums offering support for parents in understanding and coping with their teenagers.

John Meeske (MSc Psych Hons) will host the hour-long evening meetings, giving a 40-minute presentation on a particular topic followed by time for questions, tea/coffee and muffins.

John has been working with teenagers and adult mental health for 17 years and has recently joined the school counselling team full-time. Forums will include topics such as stress, anxiety, achievement, depression. The first meeting will be in mid-March (date to be confirmed) looking at ‘Resiliency: How Teenagers Think.’

Please contact John Meeske through the school office, or on jmeeske@lbc.school.nz to register your interest in attending.

Microsoft IT Academy

Long Bay College held its first Microsoft Academy Graduation at the end of last year where 43 students achieved their Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification in Word. The Academy provides our students with real world skills needed for the 21st century. A Microsoft certification helps them stand out from the crowd and also enhances education and career prospects.

This year students will once again have the opportunity to join the Academy and gain MOS Certifications. In 2016 we will also be introducing the Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) certifications. Keep an eye on the school notices in the coming weeks for registration in the coming weeks.

Learning to Learn

Following the success of the inaugural L2L course in 2015, significant time and effort has been invested to ensure an even better and more contextualised learning experience for our new Year 9 students. Providing them with an opportunity to engage in thinking about learning and the brain, these students will be challenged to reconsider their notion of smartness. What does it mean when we say someone is smart? What determines how smart you are? Can you get smarter? If so, how?

Looking ahead to the future our students will face, our responsibility as educators lies well beyond the teaching of our individual subjects. It has also surpassed the expectation that we will turn out good citizens. Instead we are preparing our students to be whatever their world will demand of them at the time. This requires our students to be much more aware of their future capacity, rather than their current capabilities. Facilitating an understanding that we all have the capacity to learn whatever it is we need to know and then equipping our students with the skills to get there in the most effective manner, has become a key priority.

Led by a team of 6 exceptional teachers from a range of different faculties, L2L students will be given every opportunity to make their learnings relevant to a wide range of subject areas and contexts. It is however in applying these skills in their life beyond the classroom that they will experience the most growth.

Year 9 students will engage in their L2L classes 2 periods per week for the duration of the 2016 academic year. The course will be delivered through Office 365 OneNote, giving students who do have access to devices the opportunity to explore the content in a much more independent and differentiated manner.

Topics to be covered include:

Learning and the brain:
  • Neuroplasticity
  • Mind sets
  • Memory
  • Failure
  • Technology
  • Exercise
  • Stress
  • Sleep
  • Diet in particular sugar
Future focussed skills:
  • Complex thinking
  • Writing
  • Persistence
  • Resilience
  • Gratitude
  • Study skills
These will be addressed through 5 very exciting units: The Ben Carson Story, Synergy, Life in Balance, True Grit and Happiness and Crime and Justice.

In addition to the Year 9 L2L course, opportunities will be made available for current Y11, 12 and 13 students to access to the course content. Students who are interested should keep a close eye on the daily bulletin.

Outward Bound
Each year the St Patrick's Day Classic Charitable Trust sponsors two secondary school students on Auckland's North Shore to attend Outward Bound's Mind Body and Soul Course at Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds. The 2015 recipients were 2016 Head Boy Patrick Smith and Sustainability Prefect Kayla Bergh and they attended Outward Bound in December.

Kayla Bergh:
Outward Bound: so much food, so much exercise, so much thinking and just simply so much fun. I went into the course assuming they would absolutely run us into the ground and we would come back the walking dead. To my surprise I returned having learnt so much about myself, about others and about the breathtaking things the world has to offer. Over the 21 days I experienced more than some people ever would in their lifetime. In fact some activities I’d never do if I weren’t on the course (like steering a sailing boat), and it inspired me to be more adventurous. Patrick and I returned with so much energy to tackle 2016; it was AMAZING!!

Patrick Smith: Outward Bound was 21 days filled with the most exhausting, greatest experiences I have ever had. I was a little sceptical at the start but as soon as I arrived I started really enjoying myself. No one really knows what they are getting into when signing up to Outward Bound, or even accepting the amazing scholarship we were awarded, but I wouldn’t change it for the world and it was a life changing experience. Both Kayla and I have made lifelong friends.

Erin Beattie

Congratulations to Erin Beattie (Year 13) who was selected for the Auckland U18 Hearts that played a Quadrangular Tournament last week. Unfortunately they lost in the final against a well drilled Wellington side.

Here is Erin about to claim the last of her 4 runouts along with her 3 catches and 1 stumping during the tournament, well done.

Hayden Druce

During the holidays Hayden Druce (Year 11) was invited to the Breakers Development Academy 3 day camp. There were 28 under 16 boys invited from the Auckland Waikato region.

They worked really hard with Breakers development coaches and also had the opportunity to train with the Breakers and view their pre-game training at Vector Arena. Hayden gained a lot from every session.

Hayden is standing at the end of the row on the right hand side in the photo.
