WOMEN: OUR PAST, PRESENT AND OUR FUTURE

Celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women on Wednesday 9 March at Womenspace in Sandgate, 10:00am - 11:30am.

In 2016 Queensland will expand International Women’s Day celebrations into a week-long, state-wide series of events and activities called Queensland Women's Week.

The theme for the inaugural week is, "Good for her. Great for us. When women achieve, Queensland succeeds." This theme celebrates women's achievements as well as acknowledging that supporting and enabling women to take advantage of opportunities to succeed is good for everyone in Queensland.

Women are no strangers to confronting challenges and overcoming obstacles in their lives. Seemingly insurmountable challenges are faced and overcome by women around the world every day. Women bring life into this world, nurture and raise families among all environments and circumstances. There is inspiration and friendship to be found in sharing our stories.

Hear women share their personal journey through womanhood, buy a raffle ticket and be in the running to win some special prizes and share camaraderie over light refreshments and drinks.

There are special activities planned, with all raffle ticket sales and donations accepted towards Womenspace’s ‘Building Fund’. This is an excellent opportunity for women to see how much Womenspace, a not-for-profit organisation, has achieved towards renovating the downstairs area on Second Avenue in Sandgate, for events. The recent installation of walls, windows and doors to replace wooden slats and an old garage door has made a huge difference to the downstairs events space, with beautiful tiles covering much of the floor. Our intention to install a kitchenette and toilets are planned and quotes are being sourced. Much positive activity is happening at Womenspace!

Please accept our warmest invitation to join other women in celebrating our past, present and future, acknowledging the adversity experienced by women, both past and present.

What: International Women’s Day Morning Tea at Womenspace
Where: 11 Second Avenue, Sandgate
When: Wednesday 9 March, 10:00 - 11:30am
Cost: Free

RENOVATIONS PROGRESS

Renovations progress at Womenspace, with new lighting fitted in our events space downstairs in late 2015. This complements the tiled floor which was laid in September that year. Replacement of gas water heaters was completed in early February 2016 and later that same month, Womenspace have contracted builders to replace the garage door with a sliding glass door, install walls closing off storage areas and the laundry space. This recent work includes walls and windows along the south-eastern corner of the building downstairs, sealing the space off from wet weather.

This most recent work has meant that Womenspace have spent over $3,000 out of our general funds. Womenspace are in dire need of donations to complete this work downstairs, which includes a kitchenette, access all ability toilets and we are in the process for getting quotes. It would be wonderful to have all of this work complete before spring, at which point we can hold an event to officially launch Womenspace as open for business in Sandgate.

All of the work that continues on Womenspace's property in Sandgate is possible thanks to the generous nature of our supporters, to the Building Fund. We need your support to continue this work. To further this work, you are invited to please make a donation of whatever you are able, towards this project. Our sincere thanks to those women already donating. We have much to achieve together.

Womenspace are most grateful to our Chairperson Bev Miles, for her continued enthusiasm and voluntary work in managing the building project. We continue to work towards realising our dreams for Womenspace's property and ask that you please assist us with financial support.

DRUM MAKING WORKSHOP
Only one place remaining...

"The drum was the means our ancestors used to summon the goddess and also the instrument through which she spoke. The drumming priestess was the intermediary between divine and human realms. Aligning herself with sacred rhythms, she acted as summoner and transformer, invoking divine energy and transmitting it to the community." Layne Redmond

Drumming is an ancient tradition throughout all tribal people. The drum is used for healing, prayer, gratitude and requests for information or journeying. Please join us to make your own round drum with a spiral back on this workshop held over the course of one day. This is a physically and emotionally intensive day of reconnecting with the ancient traditions and energies – a day of remembering and spiritual connection.

During our drum making workshop we will:
  • Create sacred space
  • Journey to meet the deer who has gifted its hide for you
  • Receive a message for your drum
  • Create your own drum, by cutting out the hide and lacing your drum together
  • Birth your drum
At the end of the workshop you will receive:
  • a bag to carry your drum in
  • instructions on how to care for your drum
  • a handmade beater made by Tracy
  • a hook to hang your drum up with whilst it is drying
  • a 'Life Sparkle' essence to assist you with any healing that has occurred during and post the drum making process

Tracy Brumby-Cameron was asked by Chief Spirit Hawk of the Sioux Blackfoot tribe of Northern Canada to make him a new drum as his old drum had been stolen. Tracy describes making this drum as "a spiritually profound, humbling and enlightening journey. His ancestors, guides and animal totems all joined me during its creation." Chief Spirit Hawk gifted Tracy a necklace handcrafted by his ancestor for the Drum Maker. Tracy honours this connection by wearing the Chief’s gift when making drums.

GRATITUDE

Womenspace have many to thank each month, however some are deserving of a little extra light shone on them for their efforts!

We have enormous gratitude for the work voluntarily put towards cleaning and preparing our events space downstairs, after contractors completed another stage of the renovation. Lee-Anne and Bev put in numerous hours, making the events space look fantastic, which included draping and securing huge lengths of material kindly donated by Moya, for our ceiling! It is our volunteers that keep us going, whose tireless contributions inspire and shape Womenspace.

THANK YOU!

WOMENSPACE LIBRARY

"The amazing discoveries of the birth, life death and regeneration murals in the excavations by archaeologist James Mellart in Turkey of the 8,000 year old Neolithic culture of Catal Huyuk in the 1960's beautifully depict the deep and profound reverence in which these early peoples lived. The Catal Huyuk settlement lasted approximately 1,000 years. The unearthed evidence of three different skull types found in various diggings showed that diverse peoples lived together in harmony. There is no evidence whatsoever of weaponry or warfare in any of the murals or iconography. And there is amazing substantiation of the reverence of a Mother Goddess. The majestic Neolithic double temples in Malta and Gozo, themselves symbols of the sacred female principle and predating the pyramids by 1,000 years, have yielded numerous female figurines suggesting the primalness of woman - she who births life into form. One enters the temples through the sacred yonic gateway, which leads to round earthen womb-like spaces deep inside. And one leaves the temples through the same gateway, experiencing a sense of rebirth and regeneration. The ancients also knew to whom they returned at the end of life. Today there are existing remnants of this mother wisdom alive in such cultures as the Minangkabau in Sumatra, the Berber in Tunisia, the Mosuo in China and the matriarchal culture found in Juchitan, Mexico. Significantly, when people revere the Mother and the Sacred Feminine, peace abounds. So, it is true that his-tory is about war. And it is also true that her-story is about something else entirely."

Leslene Della-Madre, 'Aspects of Women's Spirituality in Tending to the Dying', "She Rises. Why Goddess Feminism, Activism, and Spirituality?"

Womenspace members are encouraged to borrow from our library for up to four weeks at a time. We have a new copy of, 'She Rises', from which this text written by Leslene Della-Madre is quoted. All women are welcome to visit Womenspace Tuesday to Friday 9:00am - 2:30pm and read in our library, during office hours.

TRANSPERSONAL ART THERAPY

Transpersonal Art Therapy is being offered at Womenspace.

Art therapy is a wonderful form of healing that offers you the chance to bypass your verbal story and explore it through the use of art mediums to gain insight and meaning that you may not have found before.

You do not need to be ‘good’ at art or consider yourself to be artistic, you simply need to be willing to explore your life's challenges through a creative medium.

One-on-one sessions are being offered at Womenspace with Karen Dickson, a student completing her work placement through 'Ikon Institute' at Bowen Hills. Karen has already passed her theory and practical exams and completed over 30 sessions during her studies.

If you are interested in trying art therapy, please contact Womenspace. Please note, these sessions incur a small cost and are available to members only. Make this your incentive to join the fold.

Let’s play and explore together!
