Seafood Watch® released new and updated seafood recommendations on February 1st for the following species:

  • Prawn, Giant Tiger
  • Salmon, Atlantic
  • Salmon, Chinook
  • Salmon, Chum
  • Salmon, Coho
  • Salmon, Pink
  • Salmon, Sockeye
  • Shrimp, Whiteleg
  • Squid, Jumbo

Chinese Tilapia Improvement Project

FishChoice Supplier Member, Hainan Tilapia Sustainability Alliance recently released a new report- Code of Good Practice for Hainan Tilapia Farming which "aims to provide technical guidance on how to raise tilapia in a most efficient and responsible way that prevents from generating disease and pollution from tilapia farms." According to Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), this is a "landmark aquaculture improvement project (AIP)" for Chinese tilapia. According to Anton Immick, SFP's Aquaculture Director, “This AIP is the best example of a zonal AIP in the world and also one that has strongly transitioned from SFP to industry-led." Aussie Red Crab is a spanner crab exporter, fishery, and processor located in Queensland, Australia. What started as a small two-person operation in the 1980s, is now a robust operation which currently fishes the largest single percentage of the Queensland spanner crab quota. Protecting and maintaining the marine environment surrounding Fraser Island is a top priority of Aussie Red Crab. The fishery was one of the first to be certified sustainable under the 1999 Biodiversity and Environment Protection Act and has been recognized by environmental groups as having zero by-catch and zero impact on the seafloor.
