Issue 1 - December 2015

Have you ever been focused on one thing and receive much more than you expected?

Well this happened to me this January.  You might remember from the December edition of The Villager, I mentioned that I was travelling to Vancouver to meet with Dr. Shelley Hymel from UBC, for the purpose of collecting data pertaining to the connection between self-harm and suicide.  I ended up with so much more.  Over the period of three intense days, Dr. Hymel consulted with me to develop five surveys that I plan to use to measure the effectiveness of "Life’s Challenges in Secondary School" - Part 1 & 2.

Legalization of Marihuana in Canada - Really?
I will be sharing details of my trip to Seattle and Spokane area schools regarding what they are experiencing since Marihuana was legalized in the State of Washington.  I also travelled to a Marihuana retail store which even raises my concerns for the direction that it appears Canada is heading in.

To all of our SUPPORTERS & VOLUNTEERS!
Yes, Tell Me How I Can Help!
Researchers took a group of people that were suffering with depression and separated them into three groups.  One group was given medication, the second group a combination of medication and an exercise program, and the third group only an exercise program.  After the study was completed, researchers returned six months later to follow up with the participants.

Group #1 (medication only) - 38% had fallen back into depression

Group #2 (medication and exercise) - 31% had fallen back into depression

Group #3 – (exercise only) -  8% had fallen back into depression.

Exercise is not only for the body but also the mind and the spirit.

So if you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed or sad, please incorporate some exercise into your daily activity.  Schedule it into your day otherwise it will not happen.

Family Time

Are you spending enough quality time with your spouse?  Many couples seem to put each other on the backburner and focus on everything else.  This includes work, children  and basically life in general.  Have you thought about making time for just the two of you?  When was the last time you had a date with your partner?  Plan for some time together once a month and schedule it.

Need ideas? How about a movie, coffee and dessert, a walk along the river, through a park, just some time to focus on each other.  If the two of you are good, then the family is stronger.

Testimonial of the month

"The Dwayne Peace small group session was definitely one of the most powerful and eye-opening experiences I have been through in my teaching career. Being exposed to each student's personal story was truly an amazing opportunity, which allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. As I enter the school each morning, the small group sessions act as a constant reminder that each and every student has their own story to bring to the table, and as an educator, that recognition, has the potential to move mountains."
