• A Comparative Analysis of Fitness Tracker Privacy and Security 

  Open Effect, a non-profit applied research group focusing on digital privacy and security, and the Citizen Lab uncovered major security and privacy issues in several leading wearable fitness tracking devices and accompanying mobile applications. The research examined offerings by Apple, Basis, Fitbit, Garmin, Jawbone, Mio, Withings, and Xiaomi.

• Who Controls the Public Sphere in an Era of Algorithms?

  26 February, New York City - Citizen Lab Senior Research Fellow Jason Q. Ng is one of the speakers in an event entitled “Who Controls the Public Sphere in an Era of Algorithms.”



• Citizen Lab and partners at RightsCon 2016

  30 March - 1 April, San Francisco - The Citizen Lab and its Cyber Stewards Network partners will participate in the 2016 RightsCon conference. Director Ron Deibert will host a fireside chat with Edward Snowden to discuss technology and information security challenges in 2016.

• Ron Deibert hosted Q&A with Snowden attorney Ben Wizner

  Following a screening of the "Citizenfour" film, Citizen Lab Director Ron Deibert hosted a Q&A session with Ben Wizner, the Director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s (ACLU) Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, and Attorney for NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.
   

• Christopher Parsons on Canada's Five Eyes intelligence sharing

  Citizen Lab Postdoctoral Fellow Christopher Parsons and Tamir Israel of the Canadian Internet Policy & Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) urge for a revaluation of Canada's intelligence sharing with its Five Eyes allies.
   

• Morgan Marquis-Boire on malware attribution

  In an interview with Scientific American, Citizen Lab Senior Security Researcher Morgan Marquis-Boire explained the techniques and challenges in identifying the perpetrators of malware attacks.
   

• Citizen Lab cited in report on malware campaign

  Citizen Lab's report entitled "Communities @ Risk: Targeted Threats Against Civil Society" cited in Palo Alto Networks' report on malware campaign targeting Tibetan and Uyghur activists.
   

• Claudio Guarnieri named to Forbes' "30 Under 30"

  Citizen Lab Senior Research Fellow Claudio Guarnieri was named to Forbes Magazine's "30 Under 30" list in the Enterprise Technology section.
   

• Christopher Parsons on Canada's monitoring of social media

  Canada's Department of National Defence, and its associated research wing, Defence Research and Development Canada, are looking to purchase software to analyze social media streams in real-time. Citizen Lab Postdoctoral Fellow Christopher Parsons weighs in on concerns of the possibility of accidentally collecting Canadians' personal information.
   

• Bill Marczak on FinFisher in Australia

  Citizen Lab Senior Researcher Fellow Bill Marczak spoke to ABC Australia regarding the proxy server for the remote intrusion software FinFisher found in Sydney, Australia.
