It is a pleasure and honor to represent your interests as CARL President this year. For me, the primary role of CARL is professional development and programming. CARL provides many opportunities for growth and learning through its Interest Groups and the biennial conference.
Therefore my focus for the year will be in supporting these opportunities, learning more about member expectations in relation to these professional development opportunities, and taking action on what we learn. While continuing to shepherd projects already in progress, such as updating the CARL website and exploring options for the best membership management system for our needs.
This year I am especially excited about the excellent program for the 2016 CARL Conference, What We Talk About When We Talk About Value. Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble will frame our conference with a talk that asks us to examine the values that shape our practices in academic libraries.
Two invited speakers, Cynthia Mari Orozco and William Breitbach, will further the conference focus on value and valuing in academic librarianship with talks on valuing our colleagues through building more inclusive environments in academic libraries and on the promised value of web-scale discovery systems.
The program is bursting with opportunities to learn and share on issues ranging from Open Educational Resources (OER) to the academic library’s role in student persistence.
Register before March 3 for the early bird rate. Reserve your hotel room before March 9 to get the special conference rate. Staying at the conference hotel is the best way to spend more time networking and socializing with colleagues near and far. I look forward to seeing you there!
