Fred Carpenter MBE

President of MS Research Treatment and Education

It was with very great sadness that we learned of the death of Fred in December 2015.

Fred was a founder trustee of MS Research and served as a loyal and very able trustee throughout the history of the charity.  Initially he worked with David Arr and others to develop the legal and ethical structure of the organisation which at that time was based in the Home Counties and called MUSTER, (MS Training Education and Research). The charity initially helped to fund the  completion of some programmes of work left unfunded when ARMS (Action Research into MS) was disbanded and later went on to raise funds for MS research teams based at Queens Square, (The National Hospital) and at other sites in London.
As the interest of the charity extended beyond London based MS teams it was suggested that the charity might move to Bristol where very active MS research and treatment teams were developing and this is how the charity, now known as MS Research, came to be based in Bristol.  The Bristol research group had already set up a small charitable research fund to take a number of new research initiatives forward. This was incorporated into MS Research and the Bristol MS Research team became part of a new Bristol MS Centre based at Frenchay Hospital in 2009. In 2014 Frenchay Hospital, initially built during the Second World War, was closed and the MS Centre moved to the newly created “Brain Centre” situated next to the new Southmead Hospital Brunel building. The MS Team, the Movement Disorders Team and the Dementia Team work side by side in The Brain Centre to bring high quality research and clinical expertise to bear on the treatment of MS, Parkinson’s disease and dementia. Throughout this fairly unsettling time of change and rapidly evolving new initiatives and opportunities, Fred’s advice and support was of significant importance in guiding the charity towards the development of its role in helping to create new opportunities for research and clinical collaboration in MS whilst ensuring that the fundamental purpose of the charity was not diverted. In 2015 Fred was made President of the charity in recognition of his hugely important role in its creation, his contributions to the development of MS research and his clear commitment to practical measures that would help all of those who, like himself, were affected by MS.

Speaking personally I worked with Fred for over 30 years with ARMS and MS Research and will greatly miss the wisdom and calm logic that helped resolve many a tricky dilemma! His advice and positive support was pragmatic and always tinged with humour.

Fred will be greatly missed by all of us.

Our Fundraising
Philosophy

MS Research Treatment & Education is funded entirely by donations and every penny raised goes toward “looking forward to seeing the back of MS” .

That said, in light of recent news items highlighting the aggressive fundraising tactics employed by some large charities we would like to ensure our supporters that we do not endorse nor practice these strategies in any way.

MS Research will never share or sell your personal details with any third party nor employ “chuggers” or cold callers to engage in aggressive marketing campaigns.

We are grateful for all contributions to our research projects and endeavour to support all of our contributors, fundraisers and supporters in an appropriate manner.

If you have any questions regarding our Fundraising Philosophy please call Abi Wiltshire on 0117 958 6986 or abi.wiltshire@ms-research.org.uk

Thank you for your continued vital support.

A Mayoral Visit

On the 9th of December 2015 MS Research opened its doors to Walsall Mayor Angela Underhill and her Consort Mr John Underhill.  Mayor Underhill is supporting MS Research alongside four other very special charities during her term and so she visited us at various sites in Bristol to see how some of the funds raised are being spent.

The Mayor, her Consort and representatives of MS Research visited Bristol's Clinical Research and Imaging Centre (CricBristol)* to see how MS Research and Bristol University are collaborating and then onto the MS Research Meeting Point located in the Vassall Centre, Fishponds.

It was our great privilege to spend the day with the Mayor and her Consort and our thanks go out to them and the people of Walsall for their continued support.

*CricBristol is a joint venture between the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Bristol. This state-of-the-art research and imaging centre opened in February 2011. As a result of this unique collaboration between the University and the NHS people in Bristol and the South West are benefiting from the latest, high-quality, cutting-edge research being conducted locally. CRIC facilities include a Siemens 3Tesla Magneton Skyra MRI scanner, (funded by the Wolfson Foundation), a two-room sleep laboratory and four clinical investigation suites alongside a laboratory, meeting rooms, and access to high performance computing facilities.

If you would like to know more about our research or arrange an informal educational visit from MS Research please call us on 0117 958 6986 or info@ms-research.org.uk

BSCC Year in One Day

Bristol South Cycle Club (BSCC) are one of Bristol’s oldest cycling clubs, with a membership of 100. Their gold and red shirts are a familiar sight around the streets of Bristol – and put in regular appearances across a whole variety of cycling events in the region.

BSCC is a community based club, run by volunteers for the benefit of local cyclists. Their Annual Charity Rides are designed to give something back to the area. In December 2015 they are raised over £3,000 for MS Research.

The decision to fundraise for MS Research was, in part, driven by the fact that in February one of their members, Ewan, faced the challenges of a new MS diagnosis. As Ewan organises the club’s monthly hill climb competitions it was felt befitting that the 2015 Charity Ride should attempt to cover all of the 2015 monthly hill climbs in one go.

Members of BSCC took part in a ride that covered all of the 2015 monthly hill climbs already tackled by the Club in 2015 in one go combining about 60 miles and 4,250 feet of ascent!

Before the event took place organiser and teammate Mark Bradley said:

“As a cycle club it’s difficult for us to set the right tone for the magnitude of the challenge. People will probably think it’s what we do all the time, which to a degree is true. The additional elements are that a) it will be December, and unless the weather is apocalyptic we’ll be out there and b) each of these hills is a challenge in itself, so putting 11 of them back to back is going to leave even experienced riders feeling sore.”

Mark Bradley

MS Research are incredibly grateful to BSCC for organising this event, and would like to thank all of the amazing people who contributed towards its success.
