SPECIAL NOTICE

The Marcy-Holmes Neighborhood Association has been revamping its website over the past many months, and we are now proud to highlight three fantastic developments.
  • Our site is now Responsive: www.marcy-holmes.org is fully functional across a wide range of devices (from your desktop computer, to your smartphones and tablets). It's finally mobile-friendly.
  • We want to bring your attention to the first 30+ selections of our Neighborhood as Muse project. The project is a collection of historic and contemporary creative works inspired by Marcy-Holmes, Minneapolis’ first neighborhood. From early engravings of the only true waterfall on the Mississippi to crime fiction set on local streets, to a feature film shot in a fabled coffee shop to site-specific music, dance and live performance events…Marcy-Holmes has served as creative muse for more than 150 years.
  • Our home page now has three new features: a scrolling list of upcoming News & Events, an easy-to read calendar that clearly lets you know about upcoming meetings, and our Twitter feed.
Bear with us while we are fixing other issues you might find on the website, there are a couple of organizational items that we need to clean up, but we've made some terrific improvements to the overall experience.

GREAT NEWS FOR FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

The Minnesota Historical Society has awarded First Church a grant in the amount of $387,400! This grant comes from funds provided by the State of Minnesota through the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. (This grant total includes the church's matching contribution of $150,000 from the First Church Fund).

The grant will allow the church to do important exterior maintenance, including repairs to exterior stone and mortar and to the interior of the tower, refurbishing of storm windows, and improvement of drainage. The church also needs to replace the slate roofs on the towers -- which may require additional funding.
In the next few months, the church will be putting out a request for bids to contractors. They anticipate that the work itself will begin in the late spring or early summer.

THE FOLLOWING IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY OUR CREATIVE PLACES COMMITTEE

MHNA Creative Places Committee's purpose is to support and enhance the arts, culture, and creative economy to make Marcy-Holmes a more welcoming and desirable place to live. We strive to be a model for other neighborhood associations in fulfilling the goals of the City of Minneapolis and being an arts conduit among our neighborhood associations.
Art by Susan Warner, Elwell Park, 6th Street SE

The Creative Places Committee, with its mission to support and celebrate the creative culture of Marcy-Holmes, is working on some exciting initiatives in 2016:

  • The Creative Neighbors Database: an online resource for all things creative in Marcy-Holmes…artists, studio and gallery spaces, opportunities for collaboration, and more.
  • Elwell Park Rehabilitation: funding the restoration and protection of the tilework in Elwell (Turtle) Park on 6th Street SE
  • 5th Street SE Ped/Bike Bridge: participating in the planning for a new bridge over 35W that is a fitting aesthetic statement and neighborhood gateway. Have an opinion? Go HERE
  • Series of Community Salons: a series of three events designed to explore creative responses to neighborhood topics

BIG SUIT

University Baptist Church | 1219 University Ave SE (Dinkytown)
Saturday, February 20, 2016, 7 pm

Big Suit is a Minnesotan brasshouse (a genre created by NY-based subway band Too Many Zooz) band that keeps its sense of humor alive through its fun music and danceable grooves. Made up of four Music Educators from the U of M's School of Music, the four members of Big Suit are dedicated to making people dance in lieu of the music theory principles they were taught. One of the more interesting aspects that Big Suit embodies is the notion of a stripped down ensemble (even the drums consist of three things to hit). Overall, they strive for groove, catchy hooks, dancing, and fun times. Tickets available at the door, or at 612.331.1768

General Mills commemorates 150th anniversary with $3M “birthday gift to Minneapolis”

The Minneapolis Parks Foundation accepted a $3 million “birthday gift to Minneapolis” from the General Mills Foundation in the form of a three-year lead corporate contribution to the RiverFirst Campaign. Ken Powell, Chairman of the Board and CEO of General Mills, presented the gift at an event in the Mill District on the Minneapolis Central Riverfront, the birthplace of General Mills 150 years ago.
The Water Works project is on the Central Riverfront, where General Mills was born. The area is already home to popular landmarks such as the Stone Arch Bridge, St. Anthony Falls, the Pillsbury “A” Mill and original Washburn Mill. An expansion of Mill Ruins Park, the Water Works project will result in an iconic destination for residents and visitors – including a park pavilion, historic ruins, a natural classroom and play and picnic spaces.
