CPS to honor Heroes Award winners for student, faculty

Starting this year, we are offering two CPS Heroes Awards! One recognizes a student hero and a second award recognizes a faculty/staff hero. Please consider nominating a special student and faculty/staff member in your department.

CPS Heroes Awards nominees are due on Friday. This year we have two Hero Awards; one for a deserving student and a new award to support impactful faculty work. The first article in this Monday Message talks about these prestigious and heartfelt awards and describes the process of nominating someone.

The student Heroes Award was an idea that came from Dick Cable over a cup of coffee. For many years Dick has provided support to UWSP and thought a hero award would be a good way to honor a student while providing a way for people to contribute in honor of a personal hero. Since its creation, many people have contributed to the associated scholarship fund, and we have awarded several student heroes.

Last summer, again over a cup of coffee, Dick and his sister Judy Cable Anderson decided to create another fund–this time to support the meaningful work of our faculty and staff. Important to the Cables was the opportunity the award provided them to be able to honor two of their heroes–their mother and father, Ethel and Ward Cable.

Ethel had ties to UWSP as a short-order cook at the Campus Café and the College Eat Shop near campus and she rented rooms to university students. Her work was especially important because she carried the sole responsibility for raising the Cable children after being widowed at the age of 43.

Ethel and Ward raised four wonderful children. I am especially glad to know two of them, Dick and Judy.

It is easy to see why our hero awards are so important.
