Resident’s Quest for Additional 30mph Sign on Leaf Lane
Residents have repeatedly raised their concern over the speed of traffic exiting the Festival Island & travelling down Leaf Lane, which is a designated cycle route.

Recently a one hour Police Speed Check was carried out which resulted in 10 drivers being given warnings for exceeding 30mph and 3 given tickets for being in excess of 40 mph. These figures could have been doubled had the Police had more man power. The PC reported that MOST cars were exceeding 30mph.

A resident has been campaigning for months for an extra 30mph sign to be installed on Leaf Lane at the Festival Island exit, to emphasize to drivers the allowable speed limit..

Roger & Hazel repeatedly contacted the necessary highways department but were told that under their guidelines an extra sign was not required.

However our resident didn’t accept this answer & started a campaign to contact and complain to as many people as possible. She has spent hours on this crusade and due to her persistence an extra sign has been mounted and a ‘hidden 30mph sign’ discovered (see our top photo, courtesy of Mark).

Roger says 'Councillors receive many requests for help and have limited time for each issue, however much we believe in the matter. I am so pleased that this resident achieved her aim, she has worked so hard on her quest'

Empty Boxes?

Residents’ Parking Scheme
On Thursday Roger attended a meeting about the Residents’ Parking Scheme in Cheylesmore. As a result of that Jonathan Hagan, Business & Strategy Analyst (Parking Services) has sent us this

“On the 15 February, a review of the Cheylesmore residents’ parking scheme will begin. This review will last 4 weeks. The aim of the review is to give the opportunity to give feedback on the scheme, and recommend any small amendments to the scheme that they think would allow it to operate better.

As part of this review, everyone within the scheme and some properties on the periphery of the scheme will have a Street News delivered to their property. This will include information on how to provide feedback.

More information on this will be included in next week’s newsletter once the details have been finalised. Watch this space.”

Leaf Lane (Whitley) & Abbey Road Parking Restrictions.
On Thursday a Proposed Traffic Regulation Order appeared in the Coventry Telegraph for painting double yellow lines on parts of Leaf Lane (Whitley) & Abbey Road.
Read the details here.

Tollbar Island Update
Following a meeting that Roger had with Galliford Try and other councillors, he can confirm that after much examination, the west bridge has only minor defects and is planned to be open by April.

While the east bridge needs 30 extra piles put into the ground. Most of the main work will be carried out overnight, because of the nearby airport. The plan is to open this bridge by June. Thus the complete roundabout will be open at the same time.

The three lanes of the A45 should be open by the end of February. The complete works should be finished by December 2016. Minor work will continue after this into 2017, but will have no impact on traffic flow.

Howes Primary Revisit Coventry University
Youngsters from Howes Primary visited the BAM Construct UK site to see progress on the £37m state of the art Coventry University Science and Health Building.

In the summer of last year, an enthusiastic class of Year 5 students from Howes was one of the first groups to visit the site to find out about what the building was going to be, how it was being built and, to get an insight into the types of careers there are in the industry. Read more

Waste Bin - Abbey Road/Leaf Lane
Some time ago a resident informed us that the waste bin on Abbey Road/Leaf Lane had been damaged & so was removed, with black bags being tied to the post as a substitute.

After much chasing by Hazel, she was pleased when Mark noted that the bin has now been replaced.

“I Don’t Need a Collar”
Hi, you probably know me as I’m often around Daventry Road shops and the bottom of Queen Isabel's Avenue.

I love relaxing in the shop window of one of the charity shops or sitting at the bus stop opposite the vets.

Last Wednesday night someone put a black rubber collar on me which caused me some discomfort. Luckily my owner removed it when I went home.

Please don’t do this again as I don’t like it.

Local Road Closures
From 15th February Michaelmas Road from the junction with Warwick Road will be closed for gas mains replacement works.

We are looking to collect the memories of anyone who worked for Rootes’ the motor manufacturer. We recently acquired the Rootes company archive and would like to collect the experiences of its former workers to go along with the photographs and documents we now have in our History Centre.
