2016 Architecture and the City Festival Call for Submissions

AIA San Francisco and the Center for Architecture + Design invite you to submit programs for this year's Architecture and the City festival. Focusing on the theme of Resilient City: Strength by Design, the festival aims to explore how architecture and design arts can pro-actively respond to urban resiliency challenges. We will incorporate perspectives from government, non-profit allies, professionals and neighbors – particularly those who have been historically unrepresented and are vulnerable – as we investigate San Francisco’s environmental, social and economic sustainability. Programs will explore on-going efforts and create opportunities for development of new, actionable solutions with the goal of facilitating a dialogue that empowers our community to address chronic stresses and acute shocks in innovative, equitable and inspiring ways.

More Information
AIA San Francisco is seeking creative artwork to feature in the upcoming exhibition In_Sight On_Site: Beyond Function. Submissions can range from sketches, paintings, drawings and photography to jewelry, sculpture, furniture, and multimedia installations. This is an opportunity for architects and designers to showcase their talents beyond their design concepts for the built environment. Through this curated exhibition, AIASF aims to highlight the richness and diversity of the local interdisciplinary design community. Jury to be announced later this February.

The Future of Affordable Housing in San Francisco

388 Fulton Street | David Baker Architects | © David Baker Architects
The conversation about creative solutions to affordable housing in San Francisco continues daily including the panel discussion on prefabrication construction hosted in partnership with SPUR and the San Francisco Housing Coalition last week. Although the benefits appear promising in our quest to build quickly, panelists also voiced concerns about the sustainability and application of this construction method when addressing larger building units. It takes away from the creative flexibility that designers bring to the process.

The concept of micro-units, offered as another solution to affordable housing, continues to circulate and take root in the city, including the near completion of 388 Fulton Street by David Baker Architects which will feature 350 square foot units. While less space and more units can also help to decrease the housing shortage, it is also not a workable arrangement for everyone.

Another opportunity on the negotiating table is the latest debate surrounding the Affordable Housing Bonus Program (AHBP), the current effort by the San Francisco Planning Department to address the city's goal to increase its housing supply. Under this program, developers would be offered incentives or development bonuses, such as increased density, to include more affordable housing for very-low, low, moderate, and middle-income households. The AHBP would help to alleviate the current housing situation and allow residents to continue to live and work in the city they call home. Architects are uniquely positioned to show that slightly taller buildings can have a positive impact on neighborhoods through sensitive design that complements the existing neighborhood fabric.

San Francisco is at the forefront of award-winning, innovative design and together can advance the possibilities available to address our housing crisis while maintaining the City's distinguished character.
