Rehabilitation of Wild Habitats in Swaimeh Eco-Park
Dead Sea Sparrow (Passer moabiticus) is considered one of endangered passerines at the national level as a result of habitat destruction. Globally; the birds’ distribution is restricted in the Middle East on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates in Iraq and Syria, and some areas in Iran and Afghanistan, in addition to areas bordering the Dead Sea in Jordan and Palestine.
The Bird breeding depends on presence of flat areas where Tamarisk Trees (Tamarix sp.) are dominated, in which water is available throughout the year. Swaimeh Area located on the northern shores of the Dead Sea is of the most important areas where dense number the bird exists, because of high Tamarisk Trees density and availability of water. Generally; Tamarisk community is effected by the wide spread of farms leading to destruction of habitats upon which the Dead Sea Sparrow and other wild fauna depend. So, Swaimeh Area was until 2008 a convenient area for bird breeding, but as a result of threats, Dead Sea Sparrow disappeared from the region.
Upon a grant obtained by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) from (HIMA) Foundation in Qatar, the rehabilitation of appropriate habitat for Dead Sea Sparrow breeding, with focusing on the Tamarisk communities, and to reduce the negative impact of environmental threats in Swaimeh Eco-Park.

Did You Know!
Known as Colocynth or Bitter Apple (Citrullus colocynthis) is a perennial herb that grow on sandy arid soils, belongs to Cucurbilaceae. The habitat is spread in dry hot places as eastern and southern desert and Jordan Valley. The plant is considered a herbal medicine used by traditional herbalists in Mediterranean.
Bitter Apple is used in the treatment of several diseases such as diabetes and constipation diseases. Low medical studies were conducted regarding this plant, it is almost a few, and most of the available knowledge confined to the accumulated experiences. Areas of medical use for colocynth include;
- Soaked watery pulp of the fruits used to remove chronic constipation
- Useful in treatment of hemorrhoids
- Useful for headache and migraine
- Some recent studies have proven the benefits of Bitter Apple in the treatment of diabetes, neuropathy resulting from diabetes, fat accumulation, regulate glucose in the blood sugar level, and rheumatism.
Also; colocynth has veterinary uses; since the oil extracted from the seeds of the plant is useful in the treatment of livestock scabies.

Tamarisk plant is considered one of the important tree species that restricted to desert or hot arid areas especially in Jordan Valley near Dead Sea, since this plant is a halophyte tolerant species (can tolerate high salinity). From biodiversity point of view; Tamarisk Tree is a suitable habitat for Dead Sea Sparrow Bird, which can be found in northern of Dead Sea Area.

Earth Hour (3,000 JOD)
Earth Hour is an event led by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The RSCN annually organizes an Earth Hour in conjunction with the international Earth Hour campaign, which is a community-based environmental campaign that inspires and empowers communities from every corner of the globe for the betterment of the planet, joining hundreds of millions of people across 135 countries switch off for an hour.
The event includes switch off lights in Wild Jordan Center and the surrounding streets and neighborhood, candlelit march starts from Wild Jordan Center, pledges from participants, and other engaging activities.
