Any River... Anytime℠

Hello Anglers,

A lot is going on up north! Old man winter is rearing his head with highs in the 20's this week. With the recent warm up and now back to more normal temps, the winter steelhead fishing's been heating up. Check out the recent river report here.http://hawkinsoutfitters.com/river-reports/manistee-river/.The winter special, $295 for a half day is on. We have ays available on both the Manistee and Pere Marquette Rivers. Take advantage of time off during the holidays to get in a little fishing!

This fall Hawkins Outfitters guides landed a 19, 17 and half a dozen 15 pound steelhead! I don't remember a year with that may 15 pound plus fish. Numbers on the other hand were lower than hoped for with some days being down right difficult. The huge rainstorm that we had around October 23rd brought a massive wave of fish that crashed the dam. That  made them very vulnerable to anglers. That reduced the numbers dramatically for  the rest of the season.

After 26 years living in Leelanau County, Cherie and I have sold the family home and are looking for a house closer to Traverse City. Until we find that home we will live at our second (now primary) home on the Manistee River.
The phone number will remain the same, 231-228-7135.

New Hawkins Outfitters guide, Steve Pels writes about a relatively new anadromous fishing opportunity , Atlantic salmon. Read Steve's article below about the opportunity to catch these great fish in the AuSable.

Also below check out our new hosted trip to Alaska. I will be hosting a trip to Angry  Eagle Lodge in the Bristol Bay region. This late August trip will  focus on silver salmon, rainbow trout and arctic char. Read below and join me in Alaska in 2018.

As we close out 2017 and look forward to 2018 I have a lot of optimism. Resident trout populations are doing well, smallmouth are off the chart, salmon appear to be on the rebound, steelhead are big and mean, atlantics are showing, chumming is outlawed, bookings are great and I have, what I believe to be the best group of guides that I've ever had. I think it is the best in the midwest! I'm able to attract and keep these guides because of you, our clients. Hawkins Outfitters has the best customers in the world. Thank you for you friendship and support! The guys, Cherie and I wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a great New Year!

Tight lines,
Chuck Hawkins

Atlantic Salmon

Guide Steve Pels shares some exciting news about the Atlantic Salmon fishery on the Ausable River below Foote Dam.  Check out his latest blog post about Atlantic Salmon and plan your trip for next fall.  Contact us to book Steve for next year.

The new launch at CCC Bridge

The Upper Manistee River Association and I would like to thank all of those private and organization contributors that made the construction of this launch possible. It is gratifying to ask for help for the river and watch as funds pour in. This launch is just downstream of the bridge on river left (as if you are looking downstream). It includes parking and a restroom facility. It will be of great benefit for canoers, kayakers, riverboats, drift boats and most importantly the river itself.
Thank you

Hawkins Outfitters hosting in Alaska

During the week of August 18-25, 2018 Chuck Hawkins will host a trip to Angry Eagle Lodge in the Bristol Bay Region of southwest Alaska. Angry Eagle, named one of the top 25 fishing lodges in North America by Field and Stream magazine will offer us fantastic fly fishing for silver salmon, large rainbow trout and arctic char.

Late August  is the best time to be in Alaska. The rainbows and
char have been feasting on eggs all season and are big, 10 lbs is not uncommon. Add Silver salmon, the very best Pacific salmon in both terms of fighting ability and willingness to take a fly.

Located overlooking Lake Illiamna, Agry Eagle Lodge provides guests with private, two to a room and private bath accomodatios, great food, excellent equipment (planes, boats and ATV's) and excellent guides. The guide staff includes our very own Jeff Topp, a 20 year veteran of Alaskan guiding.

The cost for a week of some of the finest fly fishing in Alaska, including three fly outs during your week and all room and board is $7000. Not included is airfare to Anchorage, transfer to the lodge, alcoholic beverages and gratuities.

I have 10 spots reserved that week, 4 are already spoken for! call me with any questions at 231-228-7135

Capt. Chuck
