Call for Bedford-Stuyvesant Artists
Interested in Connecting with Their Community

Brooklyn, NY - STooPS is looking for artists of all mediums and genres to share engaging, site-specific work this summer on various STooPS throughout Bed-Stuy.
We are looking for all types of art including dance, theater, music, poetry/spoken word, visual art, jewelry making, textile design, film/video, etc. We’re especially looking for interactive work that invites the community to connect with the artist and/or each other.
Last year’s event attracted nearly 300 attendees and, more importantly, helped create lasting relationships between community members and artists. We look forward to highlighting even more art from our neighborhood. Learn more about STooPS at stoopsbedstuy.org.
STooPS Artists will also be connected to a range of resources. After four years of producing and curating events throughout Bed-Stuy, our team has established many partnerships that support artists and neighbors alike. Artists selected for STooPS will be invited to ongoing performances, and receive e-mail updates about performance opportunities, grants, affordable housing, and much more. STooPS was developed by and for artists, and we are proud of the community that sustains us.
The fourth annual STooPS event will be on
Sunday, August 14, 2016 from 12pm-5pm.
Please note that all performance pieces must be no more than 10 minutes in length. All artists will be paid a modest stipend for their participation.
To apply, artists must submit a bio, artistic resume, work samples, and a proposed description of the work they intend to share using the online application form by April 22, 2016. Paper applications are also available upon request.

About STooPS
STooPS incubates art at home by sharing resources and re-imagining ice-broken spaces for public engagement. Bed-Stuy grown and artist-instigated, STooPS is a conduit for community building and intentional artistic experimentation.
During our annual STooPS event, we use the arts to bring people outside and promote social interaction among artists, homeowners, residents, and businesses of Bed-Stuy. Every summer since 2013, Bed-Stuy homeowners have collaborated with local artists to host performances and art showcases on their stoops, storefronts, yards, or sidewalks. To encourage family-wide participation, our Kiddie Korner features various children's art activities. STooPS culminates in performances by local youth, the Viewers’ Choice STooPS Artist, and Brooklyn-based headlining artists.
Recent changes in demographics and economics have evolved the fabric of our neighborhood. STooPS builds on the unmistakable Bed-Stuy identity and bridges the gap between Bed-Stuy “then” and “now.” It is a tangible way to unite artists, new residents, businesses, and those deeply invested in the neighborhood such as homeowners and community organizations. STooPS supports neighborhood stakeholders by sharing the multitude of resources that exist in our backyard.
Now in its fourth year, STooPS has been a huge success, connecting 8 organizers, over 100 artists, 75 Bed-Stuy homeowners, 40 local businesses, 75 volunteers and approximately 600 attendees. The event has been featured in DNAInfo, the BK Reader, Brokelyn, A.R.T.S.Y. Magazine, and covered by News12 Brooklyn. The STooPS team is ecstatic about engaging the Bed-Stuy community for yet another year.
STooPS fosters meaningful interactions in (un)conventional venues that are mutually beneficial for artists and neighbors. It is just one way to engage, support, and develop Bed-Stuy, and as we expand, the entire Brooklyn community grows stronger.
