Attendance Reminder

If you are going to absent for a scheduled school events please let us know at least one week in advance. We are receiving many last minute absent notifications for field trips, sporting events, rehearsals. We appreciate your cooperation. Remember to go to http://www.nvyso.org/info/absent to report absences.

We thought it would be a good time to remind all musicians and parents about our attendance policy and philosophy from the NVYS handbook. Let Tristan or Shelley know if you have any questions or concerns.

Attendance:

A guiding philosophy of the NVYS is that professional responsibility is critical to musical excellence.

Absences from rehearsals are detrimental to the orchestra’s progress and counterproductive to your own personal growth. All members are expected to attend all scheduled full orchestra rehearsals and performances, however, we understand that absences may be unavoidable and have developed the following policy:

1. No more than two excused absences are allowed during any one concert preparation period. In order for an absence to be excused, the student must submit a request-for-absence form online at least one week prior to the absence date. Our Orchestra Manager will process these requests and they must have the Music Director’s approval in order to be qualified as an excused absence. Only in cases of sudden illness or emergency should an absence be reported by phone at (707) 877-NVYS. If an emergency occurs and you are not able to contact the office prior to the missed rehearsal, please do so at the earliest time possible after the missed rehearsal. Written documentation may be necessary.

2. Any musician with two unexcused absences may be removed from the ensemble or parts and seating reassigned at the discretion of the music director. An unexcused absence is any non-emergency absence that is not reported to the Operations Manager prior to the beginning of the rehearsal. Excused absences include family emergencies, illness, school concerts, or college preparatory tests. Written documentation may be necessary.

3. A musician who misses a dress rehearsal may forfeit participation in that concert unless the absence is for a mandatory school band or orchestra performance, illness, or family emergency.

4. Arrival after the start of the rehearsal is one tardy; two unexcused tardiness constitutes one absence for the purpose of our attendance policy.

Notes from the Podium
by Debbie Walden and Robin Rice

Great job sight reading all our new music this week! That was a big challenge. We will be working our way through Carmen and we plan to play it with the Youth Symphony at the Red Gala. Be sure to spend lots of time on it now so you will be ready for rehearsal next week. Take it in small chunks, checking key signatures, rhythms, and articulations. Practice slowly at first.

When practicing the Handel, start by clapping the rhythms of the grave section. Those triplets can be a little tricky!

We hope you enjoy working on your new music! See you Tuesday!
