community update

A Sunshine Coast community hub, built by the community

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

building for the future, from the inside out

The transformation of the public market has begun with a planned opening in the Fall. The building will expand from 5,200 sf to 13,500 sf. The main building features will remain, and the inside will host community amenities, vendors and a marine education centre which will be open six days a week. See this week's Coast Reporter for details.

Big thanks to Spani Development, construction manager, and to the many professionals and volunteers donating time and expertise for the building design and construction.

Watch our Facebook page for the date of a celebration of the construction start-up, we hope you will join us for a group photo!

interested in doing business at the public market?

Our public market vendor volunteers and staff have been busy planning the perfect local "vendor mix" including a green grocer, a cheese shopkeeper, a fish monger, and a butcher. Interested local businesses are invited to contact Rae Abbott, market vendor manager, at 604-886-8814.

one million to go

If you donated during our 2015 community campaign, thank you! Your contribution helped exceed the interim goal of $2 million, which qualified the project for a $400,000 matching grant from the Island Coast Economic Trust. This is a significant achievement that will offset some of the construction costs.

Community donations represent the growing grassroots support for a coastal hub that will benefit everyone--young and old, for many generations. If you haven't yet donated, now is a good time to step up. Some Sunshine Coast residents were asked why they support the public market, watch their responses in this 5-minute video generously produced and donated by Rik Jespersen.

Progress continues toward the overall capital campaign goal, with a final $1 million to be raised before end of year. Over the next few months, we plan to build more momentum with the corporate sector and attracting $250,000 in donations (funding and in-kind material or professional services). If you are a local company looking to invest in the Sunshine Coast through a long-term partnership, please contact us.
