January Schmooze

Edmonton CREW kicked off 2016 with a sold out CREW Schmooze at The Parlour Italian Kitchen & Bar on January 21st. One third of attendees were welcomed guests who had the opportunity to experience the impactful purpose of the CREW network. One of those guests was Janelle Wong from Atlus Group who had the following response to her first experience at an Edmonton CREW event: â€œI have been in the commercial real estate industry (specifically appraisals), for just six months and it is very refreshing and inspiring to be around this network – I have been looking to be a part of a vibrant community to keep myself motivated and connected”

February Education Lunch: Quantity Surveyor
Reading of and Reliance on the QS Report by Interested Parties

On February 11, 2016, Edmonton was pleased to welcome David Kimber, a Senior Manager in the capital projects consulting practice, in the Calgary office at Deloitte to speak at our education event.  David is a chartered quantity surveyor, and he spoke about quantity surveying and the intersection between quantity surveyors and various interest groups.  His presentation provided valuable insight into understanding cost reports and project reports, and was very informative to all in attendance.

CREW 101 Lunch n' Learn

March 10th was the CREW 101 Lunch n’ Learn, which was hosted by 3 past presidents, Jill Sheward, Twyla Purschke, and Marg Sebzda, in the newly renovated Carlson Construction offices.  The event was an introduction to new members about the benefits of a CREW membership and how to make the most out of membership.  The past presidents put on a great presentation to a group of around 20 new members, with focus on creating your CREWbiz profile and how to use the CREW connections to advance your career, get solutions, and socialize with like-minded individuals in the Real Estate field.  It was a great ice-breaker for new members and a chance to meet some of the new faces of Edmonton CREW.

Message from our President

Edmonton CREW has had a great start to 2016 with 3 events and a Leadership Summit under our belts!  In CREW 101 some of our newest members had the opportunity to meet with the Past Presidents and get the “ins and outs” of how to make the most out of your CREW membership.   We also learned about quantity surveyors in the first Education Event and exchange ideas at 2 CREW Schmoozes.  We are very happy to report 18% membership growth in 2015 taking us to 94 members going into 2016, due to the hard work, commitment and leadership of our current and past Board Members, Committee Members, and the dedication of the membership.  All of this is made possible by the support of our Sponsors and their ongoing commitment to advancement of women in commercial real estate and leadership.

The Edmonton CREW Board has been hard at work planning for the 2016 year and beyond, starting the early prep for the 2017 Breaking Ground Event.  We are happy to welcome 3 new influential Directors to the Board this year:  Shanna Dorsch (Education Director), Francesca Mastrobuono (Sponsorship), and Sharon Ohayon (Education).   We would also like to give a big thank you for our outgoing Directors Gay Andrews, Lisa Heerensperger, and Natalia Pakin for their hard work and dedication during their respective terms on the Board.

The Delegates for Edmonton CREW, President Elect - Patti Walsh and I, had the privilege of attending the Winter Leadership Summit in San Antonio where we met, networked and collaborated with CREW Network members from across North America, while engaging in leadership training.  AmyK Hutchens walked us through critical thinking skills, how to ignite our brilliance, and transform our energy into effective leadership which she has detailed in her book “The Secrets Leaders Keep”.  Leadership Summits are not just for Delegates, and are open to all members for participation.  If you would like more information on the value of attending or are interested in attending please contact myself or Patti.

CREW Convention is a great way to connect with The CREW Network Convention is taking place October 19-22 in New York City!  It promises a strong lineup of programs and speakers, including Amy Cuddy and CBRE’s CEO Mary Ann Tighe, among others.  Having watched Amy’s TED Talk on “power posing”, I know we will be in a treat.  I am happy to announce that the Board has budgeted $3,000 to send an Edmonton CREW member to Convention.  Any interested members are encouraged to fill out the short application form.  The winner will also have the opportunity to write an article about their Convention Experience for the Newsletter.  Applications are due on June 17, 2016 and the Board will do a random draw of all applicants on June 22, 2016.  At last year’s convention Edmonton CREW had 17 attendees that spent valuable time together laughing and connecting in business and friendship.   We are currently planning for the NYC Convention on the home front, so please contact me if you are interested in attending.

We encourage everyone to get involved by attending events, joining committees, and staying visible by updating your CREWbiz profile.  Your relationships and network will grow exponentially the more you get involved.  If you have any questions or suggestions regarding Edmonton CREW, please feel free to contact me at m.ducholke@camgill.com and I will do my best to help you out.  I look forward to connecting with everyone over the course of the year!

"We created a feature at the reception entrance that incorporates a planted detail on the stone-cladded wall, where the wall looks like it broke off at the bottom and got extended out to allow for the nature to erupt from within, " said Natalia.
