d.tech families,

One of the primary reasons we decided to start d.tech was because of the mismatch between schools and the world students would join as adults.  We feel that we have a powerful obligation to keep up-to-date with the visions being painted for d.tech students’ future.  Recently, inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen, best known as the inventor of the Segway, and NASA administrator Charles Bolden shared their brief assessments of the future for student researchers and scientists. Below are paraphrases of their message:

  • This year’s generation of students will obsolete themselves. They will create technology and see it become obsolete that quickly.  They will need to create and have two or three skills sets in their lifetime due to the pace of modern technology.

  • No one will pay you for data. They will pay you if you can use the data to make uniquely human contributions with that data.

  • You mix human behavior with technology to understand facts for best decisions.

  • Companies realize the most valuable asset will be “smart people.”

We believe that d.tech students will have the skills and mindsets to make valuable contributions to a world that will look much different from the one we live in now.  We also encourage everyone to a adopt a mindset where they can make a “uniquely human contribution.”

Have a great week,

Ken

Intersession 2: Found a Business in Two Weeks

How long does it take to found a business? One day to think of an idea, two days to make your product, and three days to sell. That’s only six days; think of what you can do in nine!  During this Intersession, students formed teams of 4-5 to found a business. The startups didn’t need to make a profit in the two weeks; the goal was to have the greatest impact possible. Read short briefs of their results.

2016-17 d.tech Re-enrollment Deadline is Friday, February 26

By now, parents should have received an email titled  “Design Tech High School RE-ENROLLMENT Packet.2.”  If you did not receive it, please search your spam folder. The email provides the re-enrollment link to SchoolMint and personal access code to complete the process online.

1. Go to dtechhs.schoolmint.net
2  Complete the sign in process. Look for the sentence that begins with “If you have an access code… go here”
4. Click on ‘go here’
5. Enter your access code
6. Review your family’s information and update/complete as needed.

The deadline to reenroll is Friday, February 26. After this date, open spots will be made available for applicants in the lottery. If you have technical difficulties reenrolling, please email support@schoolmint.com and copy jabraham@dtechhs.org.

Athletic Competition Health Forms: Only needed for students who engage in d.tech athletics competition. Not handing them in by February 26 WILL NOT prevent your student from reenrolling. Some families may not be able to get a physician’s appointment before February 26. However, we strongly encourage families of athletic participants to complete these three forms as soon as feasible and before the summer. Once the forms are signed/completed by your physician and signed by a parent, turn in all three forms to the Front Office.

File your forms before summer for efficient processing of your application. After June, the 2020 class enrollment will markedly increase the processing volume for the staff. Thank you for your support and patience.

Learning Specialist Tutoring Available

Russ Moeller, Design Tech's Learning Specialist, is available after school Monday through Thursday to provide tutoring assistance. His preference is to work on the humanities course at d.tech. His rate is $60.00 per hour. If you are interested in this service for your student, please send him an email at rmoeller@dtechhs.org.

Great teams aren’t born; they’re BREAD

The Robotics Team, BREAD, isn’t loafing. Ninth-grader Sofya Shatalova created the logo, students collaborated on the shirt design with input from parent/graphic designer Sunčica Lukić, and now you have the opportunity to wear BREAD’s team t-shirt for only $12.00. Order Form and payment are due to the Front Office by Thursday, February 25. Show your support; BREAD kneads you!

Basketball
We wanted to say a special 'thank you' to Earl Grogan, Vinny Fobbs and Steve Chan for coaching the basketball teams for d.tech again this year. The time, commitment and dedication to the players and our school is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all the  d.tech basketball players for participating and representing d.tech through this sport!

Swim Team - Want to turn heads? Make waves!
We hope to create d.tech’s first swim team but are not sure yet if we will be able to this year. We need to know how many students are interested in joining in order to continue investigating the possibility of having a team this year. If you’re interested in joining or helping out with this endeavor, please email Christy.

One-Day Young Women’s STEM Conference
March 12, 2016 at Skyline College

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a conference for 6th through 12th grade young women to learn about career opportunities in math and science. Science and math careers are fun, exciting, and rewarding and so is EYH! Conference participants conduct lab experiments, wire high-tech phone systems, examine microscopic creatures, and design their own computer software. Each girl attends three hands-on workshops during the all-day conference.

Stanford Splash!
April 9-10, 2016
Splash! is a two-day marathon of classes in a variety of subjects that are open to all students in grades 7-12. The classes you take are completely up to you as the goal of Splash! is to get students excited about learning and help them explore new topics. Hundreds of volunteer Stanford students come together for a single weekend to teach anything they want to students from all over California. Learn more about Splash!, registration, deadlines, FAQs, etc.

Maker Faire Bay Area
May 20-22, 2016 at San Mateo Expo

Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

Thanks to numerous parents sharing details, we’re in the enviable position of having too many to list in the Download. To keep the Download to a reasonable length, going forward, we’ll list only dates, titles and venues of Bay Area events. Details may be read at Public Speakers & Workshops.
